GUYS I'VE BEEN HEARING DIFFERENT THINGS ON WHAT TO DO...SHOULD I GET THE OPEN AIR INTAKE SYSTEM (i.e. K&N TYPHOON w/ HEATSHIELD) OR JUST A DROP IN FILTER ON MY STOCK AIR BOX (K&N also)??? WHICH IS BETTER POWER WISE AND ANY OTHER "WISE" THERE MAYBE???
ANOTHER ONE IS HOW WOULD I KNOW IF I AM LEAKING BOOST ON MY BOV SINCE I AM ONE OF THE STUBBORN ONES WHO'D RATHER VTA AND HEAR THAT SOUND??? THANX FOR ALL INPUTS!!!

Drop-in.

Open air cone filters and the like mess the air intake readings up. Not worth it on stock sized turbos.

+1 for Drop-In

If you really want to hear a stock BOV make sound take out your filter, should hear some sounds. HEHE

THe k&n is supposedly a great drop-in and is cleanable. But it is also probably the most expensive. However, I myself do not have anything. So I cannot tell from experiance.

WORKS Drop-in

There are many "drop-in" air filter choices...i think i covered most of them...

Works is the most expensive. The filter cost $129.

Turn of your cap-lock. Use the K&N filter as everyone mentioned here plus it's re-usable.

I stand corrected, Work drop-in is expensive.

The K&N at any part store will be $90-99 dollars new. If you look and snoop around you can find one for $30 or below used, but the beauty is there cleanable. So hehe!

Heres some information on the Works drop-in. http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread.php?t=139403

It seems like you get a better result with the Works, when compared to the K&N. Something like 25mpg [supposed] when compated to the K&N 22mpg [supposed]. Another thing to remember, and is mentioned in the above thread is you might need to get a flash to get proper performance with cone filter.

This is just all information I have gathered, as I am looking into getting a drop-in as well.

That info is all fine and dandy until you pull a WORKS or any other drop in filter from a car with some miles on it, you'll notice that the dirty area is crowned into the middle. 20% around the edges doesn't do jack as the air doesn't even touch it, IMHO of course.

I also dynoed a car, with HKS drop-in, then the next pull dropped in a WORKS drop-in. Nothing changed between the pulls. Exact same power. Drop-in is a drop-in.

so it comes down to personal preference... performance of the air filter in its intended purpose (filtering the air) is important to me, but I'd be surprised if anyone had any solid experience one way or the other

I would agree. Compressor blades and piston rings don't like sand very much. ;)

The HKS drop in is what we run on all our cars. It is a great mod for under $50 dollars. The new HKS hybrid drop ins that have been available for the past year have no filtration problems like the old 1 layer filters.

will the HKS drop in fit under the blitz induction cover?

dont run open air intake! You will get more knock due to hotter intake temps! Logs dont lie.

Go with the drop in. I had the HKS Racing suction on mine for about 2 months. the car actually felt sluggish up top when it got to temperature. When I took it off, I found that the compressor blades were dinged fomr what must be particles of sand. No big dings, nothing to damage the turbo, bot you could see something had gone through.

I switched to the blitz drop in, seems to be doing just fine

the nasayers say rain would get in it.... but IMO basically same as c-west bumper
(this project is on the evo-m how to's)

I'm hopin that i'm collecting less bugs this way
BTW you only hafta pop out that one plastic snap to install this

I'm all for drop ins over open air. Against K&N. Mine doesn't seal good around the edges. Dyson oil analysis is showing dirt. Might try a Works but, not until I see the fitment in the airbox and check for dirt under it and in the intake.

look here for some interesting information:

Nice power gains, similar to the ARC induction box thread here in NCE
