so my friend called me this afternoon wanting to togue, kind of hesistant at first since i was incapacitated for the rest of the day (long story) but i finally budged. met him at qcup at milpitas blvd then up we go to the mountain. long story short, he cant keep up with me and crashed into bluff. also, there was another accident up there concerning a 240 going 80mph on a tight curve. spun out and hit a tree and avoided plunging down the cliff. if the tree was not there it would have been a nasty dudu. funny thing is, after we pried his car out of the tree he still was going at it

Good thing nobody got hurt. :) Not to sound like a downer, but besides street racing, this will be another reason for cop to be on us. Meaning, they already hate most of us street racing, now drifting and touge run will be added to the list. :(

Hills runs are dangerous. :chatter:

How fast were you going that he couldn't keep up..maybe he shouldn't have gotten into a pissing match with you and the evo.

brwnrice

40 mph. it's was our second run and he said his tires just gave up on him. most of the time i hear his tires squealing while taking a turn. yeah, thank god nobody got hurt.

How tight are the turns?
What kind of tires was he using?

It's hard for me to have sympathy in situations like this.

it was a hairpin curve and he's riding on kumho 712. didnt help either that we just transitioned from a short straight away before entering the hairpin. touched his tires after the accident and it was unusually hot.

New 712s or old? They harden up quite a bit after 5-6k solid 'driving' miles.

brwnrice
07-12-2004, 10:55 AM
old, considering it was driven for 6k miles already.

 damn you should of let him stay up with you. you know that an si is no match for an evo but most civic guy seem to have something to prove. should of practiced feeling out the car first in a more open enviroment cause as soon as you out drive the car or the tires it's usually too late THAT REALLY SUCKS MAN SOORY

quarter through our second run i look at my rear view mirror and see him always go wide. i guessed that he is braking late or taking the turn too fast. recently he got his whole suspension done, coilovers, swaybar and tie bar. i guess he has not fully tuned his suspension.

MitsuMan
07-12-2004, 02:19 PM
yea i think he needs to feel the way the car transfers weight so he can set up for the turn better

one other reason that I don't like mountain runs... look at those pics, rocks fall off the hill side and lands on the road, and those roads never get enough traffic so the rocks stays on the road... next thing you know someone is coming out of a blind corner and bam... you see the rock and it's too late.

well... to make it short. we made a sharp right. he led by 20 feet. i was in and out of his sight. after i made that sharp right corner going 50 mph or so, the distance between the right turn from the left (where i crashed) was so short... my braking couldn't hold on to so much force and velocity from my last turn, the wheels gave out.

moral of the story: illegal races will add more fuel to fire.

i am beefing my suspension. i had plans for a chassis cross bar from hotchkiss, a front strut tower bar. thicker front sways... and some good headers and airbox for more low-mid range. plans for the next few years. thanx for the sympathy guys. i hope all will be well.

Come out to autocross and beef up your skill as well.

I don't mean that in a condescending way, but I know if it hadn't been for the time I've spent practicing in a safe environment like auto-x, I'd have run into some serious problems in the canyons or on the streets, the way I like to drive...

Absolutely no sympathy for this guy or anyone else that decides to put themselves, their friends, and absolute strangers in danger with this behavior. Save your money, buy a helmet, head to the track. Whenever I see guys like this on the road, or get challenged by them, I back way off, for good reason. Also, Old R rated tires are dangerous on the road because they can only take som many heat cycles before their effectiveness is pretty much 0.

autocross is probably the best and safest place to learn the limits of your car. I would recommend autocross even before doing track days because you can experiance the extreme limits of your car's handling in a totally safe environment (at least that's true in this region)

Worst your going to do (unless your really really stupid) is boff a cone. Cone marks come off with bug & tar remover.... hellua lot better than replacing your right front suspension right?

just my $0.02

i am one of those people who like driving the mountains once in awhile. i know if things can get dangerous up there and i am not going to risk my life, car, or somebodyies life for that matter. if you think that mountain runs is pure hazardous then do not go up there.

The real problem with alot of guys is that when they put all these stuff on their cars, whether it be engine mod or suspension, they think they are Speed Racer. Like Tam's sig.
"Mod the driver before you mod the car." Reminds me of an incedent at SearsPoint during my N.A.S.A. days. There was this guy who had a brand new Porsche TT and thought that since the car was "meant" for racing, he can drive like a "pro". When he hit the #2 turn , missed the turn and totalled the car.
