hey guys i was begging to wonder today since i always buy 100 octane race gas and its the same price as 114 but witout the led. how bad is leded gas for our cars? because i dont mind cleaning led deposits off my spark plugs and i also dont have a cat to screw up so i was wondering what elese will it damage? if i can use it i plan on mixing 5 gallons of 114 with 7 gallons of 91. that should give me over a 100. but im just courious if i can even do this without damaging my car? thanks guys

As far as I know running leaded gas on an unleaded gas engine will damage the valves and valve seats also it will clog up your catalytic. There is more but these are what I remember.

the lead will kill your Catalytic converter and O2 sensors very quickly

well i dont have a cat to worry about but what i heard about valve seat is if you have soften valve seats you have to run it but if you have harden like our evos do if wont effect them and i dont think in all the old motors that i tore apart back in the day the i had a valve go bad because of leaded gas. but on my old chevell i did mange to break a valve once but that was with 700whp behind it

I have heard it will take a few thousand miles for leaded gas to kill your O2 sensors. At first they will just get "slow" to respond.

can a evo handle 100 octain without damaging anything?

The EVO can handle the octane fine.I run 110 leaded with no worrys, anyways o2 sensors will wear out but they arnt expensive and they are easy to change so I say it's worth the extra power.

...^ where do you buy 110 leaded in your area of the central valley?

Just FYI - We run VP Racing 100 octane unleaded race fuel which we feel is a better option than running the Evo on any form of leaded gasoline. The reason being is this particular grade of 100 octane unleaded has been blended (by VP) especially for small displacement, turbo changed gas engines.

I’d much rather run something that’s going to do nothing but good for my engine versus anything that will slowly deteriorate or damage any part of it, including its all important O2 sensors. You know as O2 sensors go out your injectors will richen up.

What kind of prices have you seen on O2 sensors?

the 76 station here sells 100 oct. for $4.35 a gallon..i used to use it in my sohc vtec civic but when i did my car ran like $h!t
afterwards. that is the reason i am asking.

We only run a blend at this time because we're tuned (mainly) for 91 octane, so we run about 4 gallons of 100 per tank. In the near future we'll go to a 93 octane tune and add a little more 100.

We won't run straight 100 octane until we have the right set-up (fuel mapping). Its not a big kick in the butt, more cheap insurance if you race or if your trackin' , or even if your just trackin' for a fun day. 8)

But unless your tuned for it I think its a waste of money to fill the tank with it.

I am guessing your civic couldn't burn the gasoline and ran super rich.

i would also think so, i had a full MSD ignition (wires, cap, rotor, coil, and iridium plugs) but when i raced it ran like a champ, then the very next day it would flutter at half open throttle.

Depending on your mods and boost level, you should be fine with 100 unleaded. If you're stock, 5 gallons of 100 mixed with a tank of 91 is plenty.

well i have a hallman MBC running 20 lbs of boost and it only drops to 19 lbs, i also have an aem intake, helix 3"DP, perrin cat delete, and a hks hi-power exhaust.

wont the car pull timing and distort a/f ratios w/ leaded gas because its hurting the o2 sensor until o2 sensor failure where it goes into a safeguard mode

Who said anything about leaded gas?

Yeah. Lead bad. Or as I like to say, "Lead will will your cat. It's also really bad for your catalytic converter." ;)
