View Full Version : My wasted clutch.

So about three weeks ago I am getting onto HWY 4 West in Pittsburg when my clutch starts making a crunching sound and my clutch pedal just sinks to the floor. I call AAA and had the car towed to my parents house while I try to locate parts for the car on a short budget. Long story short it goes to R performance in Oakley. After teardown Rob the owner/mechanic calls me and asks me to come down to check out the clutch. When I got there what I was shown is in the pics below. It looks like the dampener spring had been working its way loose for a while and had finally broken loose causing all of my problems. So now Thanks to Sammy at FIA I am running a Stage 3 Vanguard clutch, man this thing is grabby, not like on off switch grabby but there is noticeably more bite upon take off and it is a bit more difficult to slip the clutch. Another plus is that when I picked up the car last night and tried everything that normally triggered my P0300 problem I had no success (if you want to call it that). My guess is that the noise from the spring breaking loose was causing my knock sensor to go wild and pull all kinds of timing.

Yeah the Vangaurd clutches are nice. I liked the one I had in my 8 before I traded it in.

No. Its an aftermarket clutch from a well known manufacturer who shall remain nameless for now. I have put in a claim with them to try and get compensated for some of my loss but I am not holding my breath. Sam said hes never seen this happen with this manufacturer before. I guess we shall see how they decide to handle this.

Exedy does have a purple pressure plate.Â* I'm not sure about the color of their disc's.Â* That type of purple coloring looks more like it was heat related,Â* than manufacturer coloring.

*edit*

Hmmmm, maybe not. maybe it does look annodized after all.

I should have named this thread " how I made my P0300 go away" :) Ive got you guys playing guess the manufacturer for no real good reason. Im sure this is probably just a singular defect on the manufacturers behalf. My question is what are they going to do about it?

I've had that happen to an Exedy clutch on my Honda.

Having never heard of this failure with the hypothetical company name people are throwing around (purple anodized parts are pretty unique), and with the reputation said company has, I would guess that this was most likely caused by a manufacturing defect.

it will be interesting to see how it gets handled. good luck!

I've seen them fail quite a few times on the older ACT clutches where they use rubber goobers instead of springs.
Also I've seen clutches where they were adjusted so far out that the pressure plate fingers would get pushed and rub on the springs / goobers / brackets on the clutch disc.

I would think they would blame it on installation. Good luck anyways

The instalation was done by FIA and the mechanic that pulled the car apart this time said it didnt look like a botched install. Of course none of that matters to some beancounter handling claims.

This is what I hate when trying to make claims, they also blame it on others instead of admitting their part was faulty.

I think it might be an aftermarket clutch thing. My new clutch has a slight chatter to it on decel. I would check through your inspection port though just to be sure, a little time on the floor under the car is a lot cheaper than a clutch install and possibly a new tranny case.
