I'm looking for information on kind of hardware the local bay area tuners use to modify the ECU..

I know it doesn't take a fast computer to be able to modify ECU's using ECUflash or use EVOScan. But it's still interesting to see what you guys are using..

I want to use an AEM EUGO or Innovate LC-1 but they use RS-232 serial connections. Most new laptops don't have RS-232 ports.

So do you guys use old laptops with RS-232 ports or do you use RS-232 to USB adapters? In my experience in the tech field those SERIAL to USB conversion cables suck.

wouldn't expect you to find it searching, but I covered this topic pretty well when i was dumbfounded connecting my laptop to my ECU+. There are different types of usb-serial adapters, and Keyspan makes a High-Speed one that works very well. I had a standard one that didn't work at all.

Definitely go with Keyspan. I had the same issues with the ECU+, and that serial adapter has worked for everything I've used it on. The next best thing is probably one from SIIG. We use those on some of our simpler robotic systems and haven't ever had a problem. Then there's IOgear. Avoid that one at all costs... it uses a USB driver written in Korea (not bashing the country, just know that all USB adapters that use this driver have issues), and that one BSODs Windows very, very often.

I use the IBM T31 series, typically purchase them used off Ebay for about $300. The have serial ports and 2 USB ports which works great for me.

For wideband I use Innovate products for the most part, we have one wired to the dyno and a portable unit for taking out and about. I also have a Motec PLM which I use for certain applications.

I've got a Innovate LC-1 hardwired into my car. I got some generic USB/Serial adapter at BestBuy (I wasn't around a Fry's to get my discount :( Works fine and the drivers work in Vista if need be...

For my laptop, I use a Dell Latitude D500 that I've have on permanent loaner status. We're phasing that model out of active use because it's too slow. But for datalogging it works great. And it has a serial port.

For my wideband, I use the Zeitronix. I also have the optional MAP sensor for it, and will probably get the EGT. I may even get the relay box so it will trigger alarms eventually.

For software I use Mitsulogger, Data Log Lab to log and analyze the data. I've purchased a copy of evoscan, but have never used it yet because it doesn't support my Zeitronix for logging boost.

I tune cam gears by the sound the car makes as it passes the pit wall.

I have a sony laptop

and own a couple different widebands...

innovate lm1 for street tuning
autronic uego for the dyno
motec plm for special cars

keyspan works for most apps, but some apps that run a slower protocol need the IO gear.

I think the killer setup would be to try an OQO model 02. Leave it in your glovebox when at the track, then take it out for some quick retunes at the pits!
