Anyone know if there is anyway to mount an external wastegate while utilizing the stock turbo and manifold?

question: why would you want to do this on the stock turbo setup??

Again... because it sounds cool.

If you really think about it, it's better than running a VTA bov.

If you really wanted to do it, you could weld the stock wastegate flapper valve shut and run the an external wastegate directly off the exhaust manifold. For better spool, you should even fill the passage of the original wastegate w/ weld so the exhaust gases would flow into the turbine housing better. IMO, it's not worth the effort. The stock wastegate setup is pretty good already.

I know someone that did this to a wrx. Dunno why, but he did. He has a wrx with a vf39 turbo (stock STI turbo). Maybe Bryan can chime in, he had GST do it for him.

Hey Eugene, you're probably reffering to Sean with the STI right? But yeah, supposedly you get better spool.

or how about a modified o2 housing w/ external dump?Â* probably sounds cool until a police officer gets behind you on a uphill on-ramp. :)

Bryan, go do it to your Evo and let us know if you get any gains from it.

Looks like a PITA to install

MarkSAE

I had one of those on my DSM, and it was a PITA to install if the turbo was still on the car. But my turbo had no water lines on it, so it only took 10 minutes to remove.

I doubt it would be worth the trouble. It's not like you need a external on the stock turbo, we don't have boost creep problems.
