View Full Version : What brand of coolant do you use?

Well, it's time for me to change my coolant.Â* I was wondering what brand do you guys use.Â* Also I heard that you should use distilled water with the mixture.Â* I've been searching to get the "real" answer to this distilled mixture.Â* What would happen if you use filtered water (like Alhambra).Â* I read that those new "Organic" type coolant has better rust protection.Â* Has anybody used them?

thanks.

Hello Warpspeed,

Most of the guys here use regular coolant, but we get the premixed stuff. Some of us use Waterwetter and other additives, but we have distilled water around for the methanol anyway, so that's what we use. Never tried the fancy organic stuff or whatever, the normal stuff works fine, just make sure you check and fluch regularly!!!

Distilled water + Redline Water Wetter.

I did'nt even know they made special organic stuff. lol.

It's suppose to be better for the environment, recycle wise.Â* I was thinking of doing the WaterWetter and just distilled water also Tam, but any idea what would happen if you use filtered water?

Depends how it's filtered. Just make sure it's water with no minerals in it. If it's supposed to be equivalent to distilled water it should be fine. Some people prefer de-ionized water but I've heard the water collects ions pretty quickly so there's no point.

Coolant contains some anti-corrosion agent so it might be better to use at least some in a street application. I use straight water (plus WW) because most track/racing rules require it. Also, plain water cools better than coolant (ethylene glycol). But it does have its disadvantages--no anticorrosion, and obviously you can't park the car where the temperature might drop below freezing.

Probably a stupid question, but can you use water wetter with regular coolant? Or would a 50/50 coolant and distilled mixture + water wetter be better?

ive been wantin to ask this but, i got beat to it i guess. either way, just prestone with distilled water will do then right? for just normal flush?

I would not run straight coolant. Most people run a 50/50. You can add water wetter to any combo you want. I usually just pour the stuff in first and then fill the rest of it up with 50/50.

I run 30% Prestone, 70% distilled water. The chemistry behind how I came up with that exact formulation is a little complicated, so I won't try to explain it here.

sorry to get off subject, but when are you suppose to change coolant?(mileage)
thanks

do a search, this has been discussed many times.

I use AMS long life coolant which is enviro friendly and can be flushed down the drain

redline water wetter is good but has no corrosion protection so it must be changed at least every year - better every 6mo

Link to AMS coolant?

IS AMS short for AMSoil?

Water Wetter can actually start attacking our iron block if left in too long.

Honestly I am not really sure. It happened on my car and now that I don't run it anymore I haven't seen it again. Honestly I thought it was kinda weird too. Ty@RRE confirmed it as well.

Could be wrong who knows...

Between Ty and you saying that, I believe it. So, you won't run Water Wetter anymore?

The article above suggests the opposite: that WW prevents corrosion. Hmm. For what it's worth I've never encountered rust particles when draining my water+WW solution from my car, but YMMV.

So premixed stuff is OK? Or is mixing the coolant to distilled water the best choice?

I used half a bottle of Water Wetter, 1/2 gallon of Amsoil coolant, and the rest is Arrowhead distilled water. Nothing but the best for my kaa :D

If you're running water wetter, you should use 1/3 coolant or less, otherwise you're negating the effects of the water wetter.

Well, doesn't 2 quarts of coolant + approx 4 quarts of distilled water = 1/3 coolant? :)

Premixed stuff is fine, assuming the coolant part of it is the right one for your car.

It's just the most expensive water you'll ever buy. The premix stuff is more expensive than regular coolant and is mostly water. Distilled water is less than $1/gallon from your local supermarket.

Good point. Looks like im just gonna mix it myself. Which cool should I go with or that is best for our vehicles?

I used the normal stuff like Prestone and distilled water. Make sure it's 50/50, from what i learned in school (correct me if i'm wrong), make sure you try to get a 50/50 mixture, more coolant doesn't make it cooler, actually water cools the engine faster.

6 something quarts.

tam@xperformance

What I do (when I use coolant at all) is use however much coolant I'm going to use, and add enough water to make 1 gallon. Pour all of that into the radiator, then top up with water. That avoids the problem of having to dispose of excess mixed coolant. It'll quickly mix into a uniform mixture once everything started getting circulated.

on my last car i used 70% distilled water and 30% GM dexcool...but it was an aluminum block. I have also ran 100% distilled water with redline water wetter with good results at the strip, the engine cools faster with straight water. But again, thats an aluminum block...

I havent touched the coolant in the Evo yet, but definately 1/3 coolant, 2/3 dstilled water

oneillevo

You shouldn't have to worry about that, since the mixture is just percentages. If you need to add, just premix the right concentration and add whatever you need. If you're just adding a little, you can probably add all distilled water. It's not like we ever have to worry about below 0 temps here anyway.
