Besides taking it easy on the gas and proper inflated tires...what are other ways to conserve fuel? I gotta daily drive this thing 150 miles x 5 for 2 months until I pick up a beater :( Sac to Frisco and back :x

Should'nt if you're tuned right. If u REALLY wanna save gas, you could ask any of the bay area tuners to tune u really really lean. :D

Ouch, that's quite a commute.Â* I drive 100-110 miles 5X a week all the time, so I feel your pain.Â* That's why I rarely drive my evo.Â* Gas is just too expensive!Â* I love getting 35+mpg on my EK all day long, and on 87 octane too.Â* ;)

^ I do the same think but with a corolla. Try using 76 gas only, stay out of boost, inflate tires to spec, get a wire grounding kit ( I have read threads where this will improve gas milage) try to get a kit of ebay, it is inexpensive and will save you money in less than 2 months IMO.

Damn Mark, we have almost the same commute miles wise.Â* I love my '89 civic and will never get rid of it. :DÂ* Back to the topic...just stay off boost (which is sometimes hard to do) and make your travel wise, meaning, knowing where you are going without going back and forth and don't carry toÂ* much junk in the car.

Civics and Corollas rule for commuters! hehe..

You can always slow down to 55-60 mph, but who drives that slow anywhere here in the bay area.. haha.. Even on long drives on the freeway w/o stopping, I think the best mpg I can get on my evo is 21-22 mpg. Most of the time, I just get ~20 mpg.

PANGES
04-13-2007, 09:57 AM
I average 20 MPG if I drive a good combo of freeway/street miles. If it's mostly city miles, I usually get around 16MPG... especially around SF with all the hills.

The combination of low boost, and keepin the rev's AS LOW AS POSSIBLE on the streets. Idk why but when i granny shift at like 2500, i get 20+ on the streets. On the highway, the diff between going 70 and 80 for me is about 8mpg!!!! so go slower on the freeway

I get 23 - 25 mpg staying 65mph, shifting at or below 3k rpm, and not boosting. It gets pretty boring though

+1. Driving like a granny along with how miserable I am when I pay my car payment and insurance is'nt worth the little money I save on gas. At least when I enjoy the car and hit boost, I dont feel as bad when I make my car payment and insurance payments, because it's still worth it to me.

toll (8 bucks) + gas= more than carpayments...I don't mind my payments so much, got used to those(write-off bitches). I barely drive it now 8) I sleep good at night knowing that I got an evo, Im keeping this car. gas prices have really been hitting me since i commute 95 miles round trip everyday. my solution (you guys have probably noticed that I havent posted for a while, been spending some time at the yaris forums(except wilson who knew that i bought a yaris when i visited him a couple of weeks ago)) :), I got an 07 toyota yaris for 10,500 plus tax and title. I spend about 250 in gas alone for the evo and we are not even talking about the tires yet. i am now paying 153 for the yaris plus 120 in gas and i dont have to rack up so many miles on the evo just for driving like a grandma. the yaris is fun to drive too since it is a really small car with electronic power steering and drive by wire. i can park anywhere without backing up to position the car. :) oh yeah... insurance is cheap too. 48 per month for full coverage. not bad for something you can actually drive for 200,000 miles. lastly, i get 43 mpg with 80% highway driving and about 39.5 mpg average on commute driving with traffic on vasco road and 580.

Try drafting off larger vehicles, it works!

Take off wing, no fan operation either.

37 psi for only highway use!

I'm usually averaging about 260 miles per tank which kinda sucks since my old se-r would get 350 to a tank and that was with me redlining it and just driving the shit out of it from home to school to work and just doin' errands. When I drive the evo like it's supposed to be driven I get 200 or less miles per tank. Instead of changing my driving habits I just plan out my trips and don't drive anywhere pointlessly. Only driving when I have to and making sure I take the fastest route anywhere involving a freeway or not hitting too many stops helps a lot.

drafting is hard... you gotta get behind a big rig but by the time you're following close enough you're going so damn slow you get impatient. i've tried... i drive back to la like every two weeks. there actually isn't a big difference between going 65 and 85 if you're VERY constant and not building any boost. it takes me a tank and a half every time... plus or minus a very little bit (i don't calculate but i go tho the same stops every time and it never varies by much.

the best is actually when i don't get stuck in traffic on the 580

the fuel light comes on for me at 250-270mi, that's only if I commute all the way on the freeway.
I think driving in the city ones, and the fuel light came on at like 200mi -_-"

I haven't driven the new car enough to see the mileage of it, maybe I'll find out this weekend.

still all stock about 2100 or so miles on the clock and get about 210-230 miles from full to about 1/4 tank..thats w/freeway commuting to the city and back...some city driving and average about 80mph on the freeway...w/an occasional heavy foot disorder here and there..lol

I would never "draft" with another vehicle, especially big rigs. You get all those crap flying at you which will scratch the paint or worst, crack your windshield. On a funny note, if you have had an '03 like mine with the damn P0300 bug, I drive @70-75 so I won't get the check engine light to go on  because once I pass somebody up going @ 85mph.............boom P0300. :(

IIRC..when you get a tune they are tuning your open loop fuel maps. When you are cruising, your car goes into closed-loop control and reads from your factory 02. Last time I investigated this, you cant change the closed loop parameters with the SW most bay area tuners use

You can but the narrowband 02 sensor has such a limited spectrum beyond +/- 14.7 (in volts of course)

The stand alones that can use widebands for closed loop as well have the most latitude for closed-loop tuning.

TylerO@WORKS
04-24-2007, 03:53 PM
Right. You can target a leaner AFR for closed loop but the stock 1v narrowband is very limited and not so reliable near the edge of its operating range
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2004/10/Innovate/images/graphNarrowBand.gif
One option is to use a permanently mounted wideband that has narrowband signal output that the ECU can understand. We've done this on a number of cars before, however never with gas millage in mind.

These slight gains in gas millage would be prohibitively offset by the work and money involved to achieve it... until gas hits $5.00 a gallon, just keep your foot out of it. :P

i havent been keeping up much, but bryan have you done this or tried it yourself? It makes sense and i all i have to do is wire it up, but is this possible on a car such as mine? i.e. just ECUFlash and mods in my sig. The only thing i wold be worried about is going ~90+ on light throttle might send EGT's through the roof...maybe i dunno, thoughts?

Yep removing the wing will give you a few more MPG.

If you are really that concerned with MPG, buy a beater honda for the commute. We have a few customers that daily old civics and CRXs. 40+ mpg w/ 87 rocks :P
