Anyone on here playing it? I got it today, played for about 20 minutes and thought it was pretty impressive. I think I am in desperate need of a new video card.

Oh no I am not the man, Garrick is The Man since he owns an Alienware PC, though possibly a different color than this. I own a lowly pc that looks nothing like that, just a standard Antec SX1030 case for me!

You think that is fast, try to build a server that servers a mulit-player deathmatch for Doom3. OMG,... the game takes a lot of resource of out your system.
I believe to have the game (Doom3) run in ultra mode, you need 512MB of graiphic ram on your card. Maybe the 6800 Ultra can handle it , but I do not think that the GT version of the 6800 can run it. I think that the GT version has only about 256MB of DDR3 ram on the video card.

Just so you guys now.

Ok, just installed my 6800 Ultra. I am gonna fire it up and hope my power supply doesn't choke. It's 550watts, but an el cheap-o brand.

JanSolo

Yep, time to buy a new video card. The game looked great for all of 10 seconds before it rebooted my pc. Serves me right for going cheap on the power supply. Now, I am off to Central Computer for a real one!

I had the specs that Nvidia recommended, but I had hoped I was safe due to the power supply I was running. Obviously, my supply was all show, no go. Bummer.

Antec will save the day, though.

And plus, these computer stuff is almost like a car, you get want you pay for. Meaning if you go cheap on stuff like graphic card you will not be happy with the results.

I paid a tad over 2000.00 for my Aurora. They are not cheap, but I am no Computer Guru. The customer service I receive from alienware is top notch. By the way my Alienware is Space Black and lights up Fusion Red  :D . Really cool. Now I am just waiting for Klipsch to release a 6.1 or 7.1 speaker system. I currently have the 5.1, but I want to be able to hear nasties sneaking up from behind me :D .

I definetly suspect it is the power supply. But, we shall find out once I switch over to a name brand one tomorrow.

That's one of the only crazy things about the Ultras... Having to use two molex connectors and a beefy PSU like that is a bit out there...

Some of the cheapo ones say they're 450w etc.. but they actually only "peak" and can't sustain... Hmm sounds like cars:)

The Thermaltake 550watt power supply worked. Now, I need a new processor, motherboard, RAM, etc. Yep, my computer addiction is almost as costly as my car addiction.

This little hack (http://ducttape.glenmurphy.com/) makes Doom 3 a little more playable. It lets you duct tape a flashlight to your gun. ABOUT DAMN TIME.

superstevieb0y
08-07-2004, 03:22 AM
hahahah was it really dark before the hack?

JanSolo
08-07-2004, 09:12 AM
hahahah was it really dark before the hack?

Yes, Doom 3 is a horror action FPS, so keeping things dark is one way of invoking fear. The big problem was switching from the flashlight to a weapon easily. You'd have the flashlight on in a pitch black place, find a moving enemy, switch to a gun and lose track of the enemy because it had moved. Sure, the sight would turn red letting you know you had him targeted, BUT you could't make a headshot because you couldn't see it's head.

There is a patch that to truely kill an enemy is to shoot them in the head to kill them. Just like the movie "Dawn of the Dead".
It's not like the game Doom3 is hard enough but it should be interesting to only shoot enemies in the head to truely kill them.
