Well, everyone talked me into going insurance shopping tomorrow. I do have one ticket that is about to drop off in a month or two and its a 2 pointer but thats it. Does that really make that much of a difference? I didnt think it would.

I go through an insurance broker, who in turn got me a good deal with Mercury Insurance.

I have mine through USAA (via my wife being in the Air Force), but received several quotes from other companies before we switched and none of them were more than $150 a month for the EVO.

My old man was in the Navy and USAA rocks. $100 a month for full coverage on the EVO and my 99 Land Rover Discovery II

I think it depends on where you live. Being in the city, rates will always be higher. I'm paying $1000/6 months for my EVO and that's w/ multi-car discount. :(

*EDIT*
This is w/ Geico. I think it's time I switched over to Mercury. They quoted me a lower price a while back too, but switching over seemed like too much hassle.

It's terribly easy to switch insurance carriers. You should do it to keep the market demand down. Geico/Progressive = high as hell.

Mercury wanted some "proof I've been insured" paper, that took geico 4 weeks to send to me. I'm not sure WTF that is.

Yeah that's standard afaik. Of course they are slow to get it to you, they know why you need it. ;)

Oh yeah they do... :D also your location will also affect your rate...cuz when i told them i lived in Union City they wanted an arm and a leg..but after i told them to use a San Jose address, all they wanted was the arm...

$200+/month with USAA. They are cheap... but I have about 6 tickets in the past 2 years... So that hurts a bit.

Usually those guys that have low rates on other companies have been there for a while and that is why their rates are low. My dad for example was looking for different rates and he got a lower quote from his insurance he has now. Alot of companies will give you a high rate in the beginning, but as time goes by and they see that you "are" a good driver, then they will lower your rates a little bit. If you really want low rates I will tell you something if you don't already know. If you are married, put your wife as the primary driver and you as a second driver. By having her as the primary policy holder, women are considered more safe drivers than guys :? and they usually give a lower rate. Now for you guys that are not married, how much do you trust your girlfried or better yet, how much do they trust you to put you on their insurance?

i was paying my all state bill and got a quote the other day for $210 a month :x , im paying 170 right now as i have it registered in south carolina. they also suggested that if you apply for the rate online, then take the price make to the insurance agency you can often score a lower price. 8)

I think there is a law that states you have a certain amount of time to tell the insurance company you have moved. The company will give you a hard time if something happens if you live somewhere else and the car is insured in another state  . I think it goes in the line of misrepresentation.

I wonder if we could get some kind of group buy together? Wouldnt a broker love to sign a bunch of new policies at once???

I think a more important concern would be that not all insurers are licensed to do business in all states. I know my previous insurer could not continue my coverage once I moved here. If this is the case and you get into an accident, you may still be able to receive coverage, but the state would have to conduct business on behalf of your insurance company--kind of like a power of attorney. At least that was how I understood it. Regardless, it just sounds like a big headache that I didn't want to deal with and switched as soon as I could despite the higher premiums.

No tickets is huge

see how long that lasts in this cop magnet.....

$200/month, 2 tickets... work over the hill (rt17 commuter) single car.. all contribute to a big monthly insurance bill.

Surprisingly, my wife's WRX is more expensive to insure than my Evo was - and that is with my multitude of tickets and her much shorter commute. :D
