Has anyone installed their own clutch??? I have heard it is not easy with the AWD and I am getting ready to try mine, any helpful tips would be appreciated

It's a big job. I don't think AWD is the issue, it's just how the car is built that makes it difficult to get at the clutch. When I have the time and money I'll be putting in an aftermarket one, too... Haven't yet decided if I'll do it myself or leave it to the experts...

I haven't done one in the EVO yet, but have performed a number of them with DSMs (both AWD and FWD). I've got one clutch job coming up and potentially another (mine seems to be holding fine... for now ;)). If you don't have a copy of the service manual, get one. However, do not follow it exactly. There are some steps that can be eliminated or worked around without comprimising a thing. Get ahold of a slide hammer w/ an 8mmx1.25 adapter if you can (other alternatives are mentioned in the threads below). You'll also need a Ford-20 clutch alignment tool.

There isn't a truely comprehensive write-up done (yet), but these two combined hit almost all of it:

The DSM VFAQ may also help you out some: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/clutch-2G.html

Oh, and this is quite an intensive job. I've heard of people taking days to get it done (and not always correctly). If you're not comfortable or don't have the proper tools/resources at your disposal, don't attempt it--leave it to the pros (or the wannabe pros :)).

Thanks for the links I think they will help out alot, the clutch is still a ways off for me but it should be my next big mod, so I am planning for it now. I wish I could let the pros do it but if its something I can do I would rather do it myself (just seem to care a little more about the little stuff when its my car) , I am pretty mechanically inclined, Ive done all kinds of clutch and head gasket and cam swaps on my hondas, even some internal transaxle work so I know it might be down for a while but I will plan for that and if I end up not being able to do it Ill get it done then. Thanks again.

Yes, it's quite a job. I wouldn't want to do it without a lift myself. But if you have a couple friends helping you out, it's not so bad.

Beer + Pizza + One hellish clutch job = Good times.

Or you could always bring it to WORKS. We are still having that clutch install special!

Yes we do have the Hyper Single Clutch. The price out the door is only $1999. That includes the clutch, OEM Throw-out bearing, Sprung-Hub Cerametallic Disc, Lightweight flywheel, installation, tax, EVERYTHING.

We got the last one done in just under 9 hours.

In other words we need the car for a day, but it would be even better if you can drop it off the night or afternoon before.

Thanks.

For anyone that is interested in doing a clutch install themselves, I found a great page on EvoM with a good walk through.

To me..it seems like one of those "once in a blue moon" jobs and not really worth doing yourself. If it were something I was going to have to do more than once or twice I'd want to learn how to do it. I love doing my own work, but stuff like this I leave to the pros. I'd rather spend the cash and save time and not mess something up or not have the right tool.

I just really like doing it myself so I know how it was done and no little thing was skipped or over looked. Even like a minor clip not holding the underbody trays on. I might never notice if it wasnt put back but when Im doing my car I wont skip the samllest detail.

If you have the tools, and some special ones are required, then have at it. It's fun, but takes a while. Be sure to have some friends, pizza, and beer (non-alcoholic of course  ) .

Here at WORKS we treat every car as if it were our own. No left over parts, nuts or bolts are ever acceptable. And if we break or bend a clip, fitting or part, (yes we are human), you can expect nothing less than a new replacement at no cost. We keep these little kinds of things in stock to make sure you are 110% satisfied.
