View Full Version : Fluid Change Time Help (Driveline/Motor/Coolant)

Im pretty much going to do a full fluid change on the car. Apart from the changing the filter and oil every 2.5k I havent really gotten under the car. So from all the reading I have done I want to clear up some confusion and some final questions before I go out and buy a bunch of fluid.

Motor Oil: Mobil1 10w-30 (extended performance)
Transmission: BG Syncroshift II
Transfercase: Mitsubishi Diaqueen
Rear Diff: Mitsubishi Diaqueen
Coolant: Preston (w/ distilled water)

fyi I have an 03. I dont have ACD.

This is pretty much on my checklist of things to buy fluid wise. Is there anything wrong with this list is pretty much what I am asking. And how much of each (in particular the driveline fluids) will I need? i.e. How many quarts will I need? You can chime in on your specific fluids too. I have been debated making the switch to Amsoil motor oil, and have heard mixed reviews about the Enoes oil. If you want to add the places you get the fluid from too that would be great. Right now it seems the only place I can get this fluid (Diaqueen) from is in the bay (tuner shops like SpeedElement and Extreme Performance) or at my local Mitsubishi dealership (Capitol Mitsubishi, Elk Grove)

Someone enlighten me today before I go out and spend $100 worth of fluids LOL

The formulation of Mobil1 is not what it used to be. I asked Terry Dyson (oil analysis expert over at Blackstone Labs) for alternative suggestions, and one of them was Quaker State Q Advanced (now called Quaker State Q Horsepower). Quaker State Q Horsepower is cheaper than M1, too--$19 for 5 quarts at Walmart.

He also suggested Redline (which is more expensive); if you want that, let me know. 8)

That is what I heard too, I read somewhere on EvoM that pretty much the regular 10w-30's formula changed and it was crappier. And that the extended 10w-30 was actually the old trusted formula. Your the first to mention Quaker State, does anyone else run this? At $19 for a five quart is almost a good buy.

I don't think you want to buy the M1 extended performance, IIRC, it is a synthetic blend. Â*The car as far as I'm aware should only have full synthetic in the engine. Â*Someone with more experience correct me if I'm wrong.

MarkSAE
07-20-2007, 11:25 AM
When did the Mobil1 formulation change anyway? Sometimes I really wonder what "not what it used to be" really translates to in terms of real-world performance. Most of us who track our cars regularly never encounter engine oil break down type problems. Most of our engine damage and wear comes from detonation anyway.. haha..

tam@xperformance
07-20-2007, 12:05 PM
I think it was sometime last year or the year before. I've also heard, second-hand by someone who frequents that oil website I mentioned, that all DOT-legal motor oils have been reformulated recently with a reduced amount of some additive (zinc? moly? can't remember) in order to meet stricter emissions standards.

Redline suggests using 75W90 in the rear diff? Can you run it in the t-case too?

tam@xperformance
07-20-2007, 01:01 PM
Some people have tried Redline gear oils, ShockProof, etc. in the TC and diff, but the one lube that the most people can agree on for those is Diaqueen.

oneillevo
07-20-2007, 01:03 PM
Yay, I think I am just going to stick with Diaqueen. The same diaqueen can be used in the t-case and rear diff right or are there two different types of diaqueen fluid?

MarkSAE

There's only one diaqueen and it's used in both the t-case and rear diff.

I just did full MT90 in my tranny last night, its a tad smoother than stock, I see no reason to sacrifice protection for further smoothness by mixing in MTL

I will be putting diaqueen in the diff/TC

The straight MT90 can be a little clunky in colder morning temps. As soon as it warms up it's fine though. MTL mix will help that clunkiness a little.

What exactly is the purpose of the synchroshift? MTL and MT90 both have friction modifiers..I think MTL/MT90 will be plenty smooth and offer good protection. I park in a garage and didnt notice and morning clunkyness, will see how it does in the winter. Might add a tad of MTL or synchromesh then

oneillevo-OEM spec is 2.9 quarts, for whatever reason it started to spill out the top around 2.5-2.6

earlyapex aka jack ass
07-20-2007, 02:37 PM
Yea you will never get the full spec in unless you take it apart and suck all the residual out.

I run MT90 + Shockproof heavy in my 6spd. About as thick as you can get. It can be a little clunky in the morning but it warms up pretty fast. I just chill on my first 5 minutes of shifting. Once it warms up though it's butter.

Disclaimer: I would not recommend putting shockproof heavy in your transmission. I only do it to hopefully make my 6spd last a little longer on the track. :)

earlyapex aka jack ass
07-20-2007, 02:40 PM
Whats the weight of the shockproof heavy?

"Heavy ShockProof
A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness similar to a 75W250 grade, while providing the same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90."

It's like bubblegum, no joke. I warm the bottle up in hot water to make it easier to pump into the car. :)

IIRC, BG II is like a 75W-80, so it's pretty thin.

When I got my clutch changed @ RRE, they put in regular BG. It immediately felt like ass. 2 days later , I put in my favorite tranny oil...a MOPAR 75W-85 exact equivalent to the SuperDiaqueen. Back to feeling great.

I also use Redline 75W-90 in the rear diff and Redline Heavyweight Shockproof in the TC. 65,000 miles on my Evo (even with a 6 speed) and no problems to speak of.

3/8" ID hose fits I think; OSH FTW. ;)

I personally like to use a fluid transfer pump, partly because I fill the car when it's on a lift, but also because with a pump you can stop as soon as fluid begins to overflow out of the fill hole. (You're supposed to fill them until they start overflowing.) If you fill it from above, make sure you have a good overflow pan under the car or a helper who can pour (and stop pouring) while you watch from under the car. 8)

Wow! Took me about 3 Hours total for Oil/Transmission/T-Case/Rear Diff. Could have been shorter but I was taking my time and reading (how-to) threads as I went.

As recommended by Bryan I stuck with the 2 qts of MT90 and 1 qt of MTL. Big difference from the fluid I had in there. Smoother shifts, feels like I am shifting like a hot knife through butter. FYI I have a 5spd.

Diaqueen in the t-case and rear diff feels smoother.

Amsoil synthetic, I dunno its oil to me lol. Ill try to log a run with it see if I see any improvements.

For a newbie to Evo Maintenance I would rate this a 2 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult. Just have the right tools. Which is mainly a jack, 17mm, 24mm, and tubing. About it. If you can change your own oil you should be able to do this.

Finished the coolant change just a second ago. Any different? Cant tell.

One Note. When trying to do the right mixture I just went with a whole 1 gallon jug of distilled and then topped off the rest with coolant. I only used a little bit of coolant. I think close to half a bottle (1/4)

So you've probably got more water and less coolant in there than you intended. Remember when I suggested you put in the amount of coolant you want to use first, then top off with water? Why doesn't anyone ever listen to me?!? AAAARGH!

Run the car for a bit (until it's nice and warm and the thermostat opens), then let it cool down (fully), and air still in the system usually works its way to the top of the radiator--so open the radiator cap and top it off again.

Also make sure you flush out the overflow container. And fill it to the fill line with water.

I believe you can use a mixture of MT90 and MTL. If your comfortable with using another 75w90 for tcase and rear I think you can. But I think if you put the wrong fluid in your tcase will begin to 'whine' and thus you need to get a new tcase.

Redline 75-90 for REAR DIFF. 10% of bottle was left.
Redline Heavyweight Shockproff for TRANSFER CASE. Again about 10% of bottle was left.
BG Synchroshift, Redline MT90, MTL in that order for tranny. Took all 3 quarts!

the acd pump leads to the front diff. so just flush it out from the front diff and fill from the acd pump?

you need to be careful with acd fluid. that has nothing to do with this how to however.

want to point me to the right path on how to for the acd fluid b/c i just got a new acd pump. i've been reading and acd goes to the front diff which is connected with the TC. the acd pump uses tranny fluid and tc uses shockproof or daiqueen. so my question is that how to bleed to the acd pump???

well from what mike at SE told me it will require 2 ppl (one in the car and one under to bleed the pump) when working on the bleeding the the acd pump. i know i'm going to have to take it to Mike at SE after my new acd pump is back on the car.

is it really that hard to bleed the acd pump i figure if i get an evo 9 service manual it ssould have a step by step process. By the way does anyone know where i can get a evo 9 service manual or download one for that matter.

you don't have to just give up. just get the right stuff and put it in the right place. why is everyone so damn adverse to that?

ever occur to you that oem fluid isn't the best?
