Hey guys. I was just wondering: What is the average life of a turbo if properly maintained? So I know how long my Evo will last :)

the average life of the turbo, is aprox the time it takes for you to realize that you're not making enough power...

Anyone have any hard figures on how turbo life is affected by running higher-than-stock boost at different RPM's (volumes of airflow)?

From what I hear these turbos are fairly sturdy...if properly maintained (i.e. good oil and scheduled changes) I wouldn't be surprised to see at least 70K+ out of them.

The stock K03 turbos on my old S4 were notorious for going out early, but the guy that bought it from me is still on the same turbos after 80K miles running at 18psi (stock is 7.5psi). Its all about maintenance.

Here is a add on question. How about if you don't boost that much. Like you are always in bumper to bumper traffic? Or it doesn't really matter?

Yes, it matters ;) I think Gilbert is our guinea pig on this one. I checked his shaft play at 49K and it was minimal-- a good sign. Once you start upping the boost and going beyond the efficiency range is when the lifespan will start to decrease.

My DSM comparison: The one and only turbo failure I had came at about 38K (just beyond the warranty :(). I would say 75% of the time I had the boost set about 17PSI (14 was stock and peak efficiency was about 12). It was always timed and always on synthetic. The "bearing" in the center cartridge failed and caused the impeller to hit the housing--not a pretty picture. This turbo was notoriously small and was being forced to work well beyond it's engineering protocol ;) I hear Audi's experience the same--too small of a turbo spinning too fast for too long.

Jamie could you speculate on what "beyond the efficiency range" means for the stock Evo engine/turbo set-up, in terms of boost X rpm?

ez76 took the words out of my mouth (but he added a cool graph  ). This would definitely be good info to know considering that the stock setting is about 19psi. Would going to 21 or 22 psi make that much of a difference?

Speculate... sure ;)

I don't have any calculations to share at the moment, but a couple of pounds shouldn't have a significant change in longevity. My DSM example would probably equate to trying to run 25+PSI on the EVO--daily. If you're turbo is struggling to hold a set level of boost all the way to redline, you may be pushing the limits of efficiency (I'm not talking the stock boost taper ;)). My T25 set at 17PSI was lucky to see 14PSI when I reached 7K.

Turbo life is based on how abusive you drive. Turbo timer will help your turbo to last longer and as well as oil changes. Also when you try to up the boost and past it efficiency range that also can decrease your turbo life.

You do know this thread is nearly 2.5 years old?

Also, our turbos are oil cooled and water cooled, a turbo timer is not necessary.

^He has been reviving old threads all day. Â*I can't argue with him because if he starts new threads we bitch at him, if he digs up old threads we bitch at him, it's a lose/lose situation for him.

Researching information to find out more info is one thing. It appeared he was giving feed back to someone who posted a question 2.5 years ago. :\

58,000 on my turbo, has been tuned for 22psi spike (19.5) to redline for the entire life of the car. Seems to be doing just fine.. I dont rape my car, but it has had its fair share of 3rd gear pulls for logs (lotssss of them), and dyno days. Gettin the 20 g IX turbo this summer tho :D

means i have 20k more to go to save up for a new turbo.

03 VIII, / 51k miles, / 22psi - 25 peak.

When I see a vendor on the other site have a sale on Evo turbos, I will buy one so I will be ready to the change. I saw a TME 6.5 on sale for $600 but forgot who the vendor was and it wasn't no cheap Taiwan part, it was a Mitsubishi one.....at least that what the guy wrote.
