View Full Version : Good Smog Legal Aftermarket Intake?

I just bought a 2006 MR and looking to do some mods. My Evo already had a Apexi intake installed which I hear is restrictive. I want to put a smog legal after market intake on my little Evo if possible. Are there any good ones available? I wanted the Bushur intake, but it's not CARB approved.

I'm considering a Bushur exhaust with HFC and bullet muffler, boost controller and a Speed Element tune. I've checked out the sound clip of the exhaust and it doesn't sound too loud. According to Bushur, with HFC it's just a little louder than stock.

Any opinions welcome.

Btw, I'm in Sunnyvale California.

Carb legal brands are AEM and K&N

And INJEN is now also CARB certified...

Ohoh Also the Hotness is that the new P.n. Injen kits come with full alum. IC
piping and the whole system is C.A.R.B. certified
I may be getting rid of my AEM to do this..
BTW whatever you decide on just make sure they have a E.O.# for 2006
model year..
The injen kit i was referring to above is only approved I believe up to 2005 evo's

Thanks for the replies. Â*From what I understand, the K&N intake isn't very good, how is the AEM and Injen? Â*Flows better than stock? Â*Since my Evo didn't have the stock intake and I have to spend some money on an intake, I'd prefer to upgrade if possible instead of buying a stock replacement. Â*

BOOSTX2,
ic Injen Short Ram Intake 03-06 Evo VIII, MR, IX Cast Alum Intake System w. Full Intercooler Piping for $410.40 from www.injenairintakes.com. They say it's CARB certified or pending. I'm going to verify tomorrow.

I first heard about the CARB-certified Injen intake set from EIP about a month ago and they said that they come in black or polished. :D PM EIPracing to get more information.

JUST PUT A K&N CONE FILTER WITHOUT THE HARD PIPE

Go take the sticker from a K&N product that has it, get the best intake setup there is, hard piping, routed in a cold air location, slap that sticker on, voila, carb legal.

A little trick of the trade.

why not do this: :)

then modify the stock airbox like Chris did:

uber stealthy. not really the exact answer to your question but this is also a nice solution if you're worried about cops popping your hood if you get pulled over :D

Re: The CARB sticker, let's say for a K&N intake, I don't recall, does it contain a product description, or is it just the CARB Cert number on the sticker?

Brice: Unfortunately I don't have the stock box, otherwise I would switch back to it.

I'm considering the Injen SP1898P, has the intake and intercooling pipes. Lancershop has a reasonable price on it. Only thing is, not CARB Cert, it's pending.

Pending for 2006 model year?/\

Yep, SP1898P will work on 03-06 Evos, but CARB Cert is pending

Pending for 2006 model year?? or for 2003-2006?
They told me for my 2003 its approved now...

hmmm, I assumed the CARB Cert applied to part number of SP1898P. So, if CARB is pending, it's for that part number regardless of year. Since that same part number is used for all years (03-06).

I have an email into Injen inquirying how I would obtain the CARB sticker if I purchased the product now and it was certified in the future.

I was told That The new Intake kit with all IC pipes is currently approved for
2003-2005 but pending for the 2006-2007 model year..
However B4 I order anything I will confirm that it is in fact approved for my 2003..
Because if it's pending I will stick with my AEM until the Approval is confirmed
as Pending don't help with police or sate ref...
My AEM has an E.O.# that is correct for a 2003 EVO VIII

I was just contacted by the Injen Rep, since the SP1898P is basically the same design as the previous model (IS1898?) there should be no problem with CARB Certification. I may just go with the Injen product. I wonder if replacing the stock ic pipes with these Injen's will really make any difference?

Ya - the state take a few years to certify products or even cars under an E.O.number. I'm using AEM short ram w/ heat shield myself, & lovin' it, & the E.O.# is approved for my year. 06' & up it's gonna take more time, they have to go through alot of **** to certify them belive it or not.

I may try the AEM Short RAM Intake. I just don't feel like shelling out the big bucks for an intake (Injen). Does the AEM (22-435) come with the DryFlow filter?

Is the intake carb certifed or pending for 2006 MR?

I also pinged the AEM forum with these questions. I'll post if I get a response.

Yes it does come with the dryflo filter.. If you want to confirm, go to the website
ARB.CA.GOV and check the aftermarket parts database and input the E.O.#
for the intake you want to buy..
It will tell you exactly what vehicle make model year that the E.O.# is assigned to..
hope this helps.. Also handy when buying used parts ;)

BOOSTX2,

Thanks for the reply. Yep, I just got confirmation that the AEM comes with the dry flow filter and is CARB certified. Btw, once my intake and exhaust arrive, I have an appointment with Speed Element for the install and tune mid Oct. Looking forward to it.
