do you guys think a bigger Oil cooler is necessary for moded Evos?? if no plz explain, and will the bigger oil cooler keep our engine running strong and extract more HP since the engine oil doesn't hit as high temp as b4?

Have you tried running an oil temp gauge to see if your car's oil temp actually necessitates buying an upgraded oil cooler? Getting some kind of quantifiable data to back up your purchasing decision would probably be more useful than than simply asking for theories.

well I have a oil Temp on my car, depends on how I drive the car, on a 90degree summer day, driving on 680 oil temp is around 100-105degree, if I get a upgrade oil cooler, will it lower the Oil temp by 5-10degree? I will be getting the Mocal Oil cooler, cost around $400dollor 35-40%bigger then our orginal oil cooler

EvoVIII, have you track your car yet?
It should come in handy there.

I don't think it matters, as long as the oil temp doesn't go high enough that your oil will break down, right?

On a warm day with extended (hours of) freeway driving, or after a spirited drive I'll see the oil temp go to around 150F. I've seen it go as high as 210F (after multiple autocross runs on a hot day with around 100F outside temperature), but that's well within safe limits; the "flash point" for almost any modern motor oil should be greater than 400F; for Mobil1 10W30 it's 471F. It seems to me that as long as the oil is cool enough to do its job, you're fine.

More than you ever wanted to know about motor oil: http://motor-oil-bible.com/mob-2-2-04.pdf

Unless you run your car on a track, I don't think bigger oil cooler is needed. You can use a little bit thicker oil if the oil temp is higher. But a bigger oil cooler won't do any harm as long as the stock thermostat (? I am not sure what they call that temp-sensitive valve for oil system) is there.

Or you can just hook up your water sprayer to your oil cooler for track days. :D

Bigger cooler = more weight = bad :P

Well if you have $350 burning a hole in your pocket and nothing else to do with it, I'm sure guys here can recommend some good strip clubs.

I'm not an owner yet but I have noticed that the oil filter is turned down. Is there room to upgrade to a larger (I think it would be a 1quart) filter? That would give you slightly added cooling and more capacity. Which should help prevent viscosity break down.

Or this could be such a small change, that it won't make a difference at all. Yeighs/Neighs ????????????????/

I drive an air oil cooled 911 from back in the day and we dont really concern ourselves with oil breakdown issues untill 240.

There is a famous quote by an old porsche owner/racer, it goes "240 is hot 250 is too damn hot" and pretty well sums it up, sounds like you are no where near those temps so...

If you do buy a bigger oil cooler, most than likely you will modify the mounts or even yet, remount it somewhere else. I'm not sure if you have seen our stock oil cooler, it is pretty big. Not just by peeking through the grill, but if you take the bumper off, you will see how big it is.

well yeah of coz I seen it, the size will be about the same, but is almost half the size thicker then the stock Oil Cooler, all hoses clams etc.. included already in the package and I am assuming the mounting and fitting is the same as the JDM Evos.

http://www.horizon-hk.com/product/ock/ock_5_big.jpg thats how its gonna look, is not the exact oil cooler for the Evo, but it will be similar to this 1 u see, the 1 we use doesn't need the extra oil Adaptor to hook on inbetween the oil Filter/oil pan, is just gonna fully bolt on to the existing oil cooler with new hose and cooler

hey i am wondering if the group concensous is the same now 3 years later? I was hitting 95C today, and when i got to about 89C the car began to idle differently(lower RPM, and rougher but i have 272's so i'd expect that at 775rpm's). The rougher idle scared me and that's when i started watching my oil temp more closely. After run three I sprayed the oil coller with water and that helped.

I'm thinking that if the oil's "flashpoint" is like 475F, than i will be okay with 120C oil temp, assuming my water temp is still in the middle like always correct?

I hit 130-135c oil temps at the track, I think you will be ok. :)

sweet exactlywhat i needed to hear. Does your idle change or get lower when the temp gets that high? i know you have the same cams as me so it'd be a decent comparison

Not that I have noticed. I have my idle set to about 980 anyway.

Sounds like you just noticed the difference in performance from the car being "heat soaked" summer always make the car less fun to drive. Hot weather FTL. :(

Funny, I freaked about the exact same thing at an autox last year and ended up calling Bryan with the same question.

Am I the only one seeing 180-190 F on a regular basis even on cold nights under normal driving conditions???? Or is my guage off (Defi BF)???

on the stock oil temp gauge in the oil pan and with no cams and a works ceramic coated dp I see ~75C on the hwy (167F), slightly less if it's cold out

On the track I see 110-115C (~230F)

I have the BF oil temp gauge in the filter adapter. Normal is 185F - 190F on most days. At Thunderhill when really pushing it I have a warning light set at 260F and have seen it a number of times. If I let up between corners and just let some air circulate it drops right down to 240F.
