I posted this info in response to another thread elsewhere, but it probably is better suited here aswell in the how-to section.

The following is one method and the one I used to succesfully adjust the headlights. I don't have first hand experience with any other methods like using a screw driver or torx wrench, but if there are any others out there that have experiences or other ways of succesfully adjusting the lights feel free to contribute.

Tools used.
- 1/4" drive
- 10mm socket
- drive extension (optional)

Here's the driver side with the socket drive on the adjustment nut. Turn counter-clockwise to raise.

Passenger side with the coolant overflow bottle moved over to the right. The socket drive also has a 3" extension on it to reach the nut a little easier. Again counter-clockwise to raise.

Has anyone done this before? I tried doing it when I first got my EVO with no luck.

yeah you can also use a phillips screw driver to spin the gear but its plastic and strips easy, so be carefull and make sure you adjust both of them evenly so that they look blue then white at the same time and are level. if that makes sense.

the plastic gears really suck and strip super easily. I adjusted mine, but the gears were slipping right off the bat with a socket wrench. Ended up having to use a straight edge screwdriver to try to push the gears individually, and it sorta worked, but stripped them even more. i don't think i could adjust my drivers side one at all anymore.

does this adjust the pitch of the light? so they are balanced?

trinydex

it adjusts the up and down. what do you mean balanced?

for example my headlights are perfectly in place but it looks like the passneger side light doesnt reach the same height on the light when i drive. the light isnt vertically as tall as the drivers side

that's an up and down thing... you can adjust it. each light has its own up and down adjustment.

Is this counter clockwise facing the front of the car?

I thought this is for non HID headlamps? HID's can be adjusted electronically in the cabin cant they??

trinydex

yeah but you still need to be able to change it. the cabin adjustment only goes down.

unless turn your headlights down, turn the nuts til they're flat... then you can turn the headlights up for canyon runs like i do.

There's only one way to go counter clockwise. Doesn't really matter which way you're facing...

So this is for HID's then? anyone confirm?

What are the opaque white caps on each light for adjusting? I couldn't pop it off.

it's for all evo headlights. you move the nut around and it will move the projector housing around. how else can you aim headlights?

mbrickner

I wasn't sure if the projector portion moved independently of the high beam reflectors. So, I take it this only adjusts the HID's?

trinydex

you can't aim the high beam and fogs i don't think, those are dead fixed.

sorry no pics the covers are located on the top of the headlight over the projector, when the cover's are removed there seems to be an adjustment screw. I tried turning them and nothing happened.. just wondering why there there :D

ok i just looked at it. it's like a cap that has a little tail that goes to a clipish thing that holds the cap.

there's one above each light in the housing.

the service manual only mentions the foglight adjust for something that kinda looks like that white capped thing.

Just a note. On 05+ models, you need to unbolt and move the ACD reservoir out of the way before you can adjust.

Tried adjusting my headlights the other night, lets just say it was frustrating. The passenger side was cake, driver side stripped instantly. I have an 03 by the way. Be careful guys
