Im getting ready to do this next year. I know its a debatable topic, but how many of you have done the 1X1 method, & how long has it been since the install? Hopefully its holding up ok for you guys. Thanks

I did the 1x1...about 250 miles...
No issues other that a bad intake cam shaft, but that's another story...

I've seen an 06 RS hold up for about 5k with 1x1 done at 35k so at 40k when my buddy parted it out it was fine and Ive never seen more problems on a evo ix than his

I have not done mine, boosting to 25, if i blow a head gasket it will give me a reason to change the springs and retainers when i remove the head.

1x1 is removing/ replacing one headstud at a time...There's a how-to on EvoM if you'd like pictures...

btw, you don't need to pull the head to do springs and retainers

unfortunately i had to borrow the tool from somebody else. didn't seem like something i'd be doing too often.
and even less so after i finished

kind of a pain to do. not horrible just time consuming

What's the issue with doing it 1x1? I don't get it

Basically the head gasket could leak by changing them 1x1, if you don't change the studs and run high boost it could leak. Pulling the head and changing the head gasket and the studs at the same time is the best way to ensure no leakage.

yeah I already have 28K on mine having it for about a year and a half now. He had his for about 9 months...he daily drove/tracked it and he commuted from Danville to auburn ti Tahoe often thats where his two machine shops are. He went though 20g FP .50 Trim Gt30 all tuned and tested by himself and concluded the 20G being the best on 91 for DD. FP for the extra mile and lag and GT30 on race gas. He hates the 50 trim iono why

I believe mine was done with this method and it's been about 13k miles or so. Car has been running 25psi for the past 7k miles or so and 23psi before that since they were put in. So far so good.

iono guys becuz one of my buddy had his done with the same method and he's only driven it for five thousand miles and his head gasket is leaking pretty good. on top of that he took to one of our vendors and had done. he took it back the second time and had it done again under warranty, i dont know it they pulled the head off this time but it is still leaking after he got the vehicle back. i would be pissed if i was him.

sooooo.....with the 1x1 method are you guys replacing the head studs by yourself or taking it to a shop? i do see that a few of you guys have already put a good amount of miles on your cars and everything is good and well but i lost faith in that method after seeing my buddies car and i myself personally have never used that method.

I've done this method on 2.2/2.0 Ecotec chevy head, Srt-4s (A853), and a few nissan VQ30dek heads....never leaked as far as I can tell but the SRT-4s ALL had the gaskets replaced when I did the studs. Ive never done them on an evo before so my info could be useful or uselss. My friend did it himself in front of me and like I said it held up fine.

so if i'm right your buddy installed his head studs on his evo, or was it another car? with the 1x1 method it is a lot easier then taking the head off, would u recommend anyone that is very confident in this procedure.

Its very simple install, but just like anything there are people that are going to do it wrong....

I ve done 2 evos mine and a friends with a 35r and meth who DD his car... no problems whatsoever

The right procedure is starting from the middle, then out, right? As you all know, evos are slightly different, so head imperfections, or installer may contribute to leaks, and this method is then crucial. Just my drunk thoughts :), and hoping my evos/or me's not one of them.

head imperfections is a VERY rare case but it does happen

PS. Usually prevented by thicker gaskets

sooooo.....how much will you charge for an install? i would rather have someone who's done a few of install instead of me doing it.

It's better to take the head out and install the head studs with new gasket. This method will ensure you a leak free install and less headache later down the road. IMO
