Had a blast at my first rallycross this past Sunday. Results are now up: http://www.sfrscca.org/RallyX/scoring/rxresults_10172004.pdf

Congratulations to Evo drivers Chris (in the WORKS shop car) (1st place in O4), Jay (1st in SM4), and Oliver (2nd in SS4) (you sure your car is SS4-legal? ;)). As for me, I placed about mid-pack in SS4; would have placed a couple spots higher had I not gotten disoriented in my own dust cloud on my last run. I'm fairly happy with how I did considering this was my first rallycross, and I had the least competitive tire setup of anybody there (Falken Azenis Sports with very little tread left).

Anyway here are the videos I got:
- Run 1 (http://www.norcalevo.net/gallery/albums/album196/rallyx_tam_20041017a.wmv) (1.11 minutes)
- Run 2 (http://www.norcalevo.net/gallery/albums/album196/rallyx_tam_20041017b.wmv) (1.13 minutes)
- Run 3 (http://www.norcalevo.net/gallery/albums/album196/rallyx_tam_20041017c.wmv) (1.08 minutes)
- Run 4 (http://www.norcalevo.net/gallery/albums/album196/rallyx_tam_20041017d.wmv) (1.14 minutes)

Yeah. And I thought autocross was slow. ;) Despite not shifting at all there was plenty to keep me busy, as you can see. Some of the STi guys may have needed to shift as their 1st gear is much shorter; I heard Chris in the WORKS car bounce off the limiter a few times just before the finish but even he didn't shift.

Hard to say... they're similar and yet very different. I'm not sure I'd want to rallycross my daily driver on a regular basis, as it's quite a bit harder on the car than autocross; not to mention the car gets sooooo dirty. :)

From a driving point of view rallycross is very different: you need to react more (because things can be so unpredictable) quickly, apply larger steering, throttle and braking inputs are needed, compared to autocross where smaller, smoother inputs are key. Getting the car rotated into a turn is a good thing in rallycross and it's probably one of the most fun things about driving on dirt--drifting your car sideways without smoking your tires in the process.

One of the reasons I like rally and rallycross is I find it's a much more grasssroots-based motorsport and the people are more friendly and down-to-earth than in other motorsports. Even in auto-x if you're a newb a lot of the top people won't give you the time of day, but from my experiences this past weekend and at Rim of the World Rally, I find that's rarely the case in rally.

Another key way rallycross is different from autocross: you drive with your windows rolled UP. If you ever forget, the dirt shower you'll get will remind you.

I'm planning on getting into "real" performance rally in the future, but I'll be building/buying a dedicated rally car for that purpose.

until the EVO has been around a while, that's what a WRX is for...

plentiful, with cheaper parts to go play in the mud with....

that looks like fun....

I think you should get the MR and use your current EVO for your rally events :D

In the MR! The mud will do wonders for the brand-new paint job!

That's exactly what we did! Our MR will never see dirt but with our Silver EVO, way too late... 2 seasons and 4+ drivers but the experience is finally paying off. We hope to win the '05 Championship as well. Thanks for everyone's support.
