If you can swing it, a CF one is preferable , must easier to carry around due to the weigh issue.

I love my Manfrotto 3221WN with Bogen head. Decent price and has worked great for me for years.

my friends dad is a photographer and he recommended a bogen stand thats heavy so it wont fall over as easy as a light one. since i don't know shit about tripods I'm getting more opinions.

Yup, heavier it is, the more stable the camera will be.

I brought my lighter cheaper tripod to Ireland when I went because it was easier to carry but I wish I had brought the manfrotto one as it was usually really windy there.

Look into Manfrotto/Bogen. Go onto www.pricegrabber.com and search it. Not overly expensive ($100-200), yet not cheap either. Strong built, sturdy enough to support ~15lbs. I would consider this 2-3 steps lower than a full on professional tripod, if there is such a thing. Make sure you get a good head for the tripod too. Manfrotto/Bogen ballhead recommended.

I think you need a sandbag for any tripod at that location!

But yea, if you know that you are heading into hostile territory, bring the big guns.

I have some of those megabuck tripods like Bryan, but PIA to carry around.
