Put in the Odyssey PC680 tonight:

Made my own tray (bolted to the stock battery tray) out of fiberglass. Seems to be holding together pretty well. Battery tie-down bar is an "Ace Hardware Racing" item. ;) I intend to replace it with a better solution later.

Pretty cool! How much weight did you save?

Looks good. Where did you buy and how much?

I don't have a scale but I'd say the stock battery is somewhere north of 30 lbs; the PC680 is 13 lbs so I'm saving about 20 lbs, and improving front-rear weight distribution by over half a percent.

Paid around $80 on eBay (PC680 with SAE battery posts). Fiberglass material and supplies, $80 (but I'll be able to use it for other stuff). Hardware, $10. Improved handling, PRICELESS. ;)

are you planning on upgrading the UICP ?? and if so the battery IMO would be best sitting side ways, similar to the BR set up.

Not for the moment. I would, however, like to make a full replacement battery tray. I only have the battery this way because the factory battery attach wires won't reach the battery mounted sideways or (as was suggested to me) lying down.

Would anybody be interested in a group buy on custom mini-battery tie-downs? I've designed one at eMachineShop.com, made of powdercoated steel, but can only get the cost down if I get it made in quantity; something like $16 each for 10.

Thanks, I guess I forgot to undo some of the clips that normally tie down those cables.

The other advantage of mounting it that way is that it puts the battery a bit further away from the engine, keeping it cooler.

I'll have to work a bit on the design but I believe I'll be able to put together a full mini-battery install kit (tray, tie-down, hardware) for around $50-$60 (maybe even less depending on quantity) compared to BR's $135 ($225 minus say $90 for the battery). Anybody interested?

Thanks. I haven't worked on the battery tray design in a few weeks; mainly because I've been too busy to prototype and test-fit a design. But I have a bit of cash to play with at the moment so hopefully soon I'll get around to it and get a batch of 10-20 made.

For those of you that don't want to wait, the guys that originally thought of the idea have them instock;)

I started checking around today for cheaper batteries after seeing that Odyssey for "around" $80, as posted.

I can't shop from E-bay and plan to have parts instock. Cheapest place I have found so far is just over $80 and that doesn't include the battery posts which are $12.95 each.

I'd like nothing better than to be able to sell our complete battery kits for $135 or so, problem is the nice black lightweight dry cell battery we use now with posts cost us more than that.

Then you have the plated tie down bolts, billet aluminum undertray and SS laser cut top plate, adds up quickly. Believe me, there isn't a bunch of profit in our kits at $225 each.

I'll keep looking for deals on batteries as it kills me that my good ideas get copied and then undercut on price.

BTW, our kit saves 20 pounds from the nose of the car.

or for the truly cheap, here's my super-budget yet still completely stable installation (tested in 4 track days at Sears and big Willow).
