Just trying to get a discussion going. This Advanced Tuning forum is kinda dead lately.

What ARF do you guys run? (91oct) Spoolup?, Peak torque?, tapering to what up top?

Meth heads too. AFR? 100% or 50/50?

On Evo 9, 11.4/11.2 at peak torque, 11.0 to 10.9 up top, on 91

With meth, 50/50, 11.5-11.8

100%, 11.2-11.3

Bryan, is it necessary to taper up top. I notice some people run a steady AFR from 4k to redline.

Depends on boost / timing / mods / what your car likes

If the stock turbo tapers to 18-19psi up top, wouldn't you be able to keep the AFR as lean as the midrange, and just add timing?, since there is less boost? I dont really know if im making sense.

Really depends on what the car likes.

Some evos I bring the AFR's up at redline.

Interesting. .
Question, Â*Is it normal to see 21:1 on the wideband for a few seconds, when i put the clutch in after accelerating? Â*

Yes. You will also see that during engine braking.

The trans doesn't like engine breaking.

i'm only running 20-19 psi boost, with 11.0-11.1 AFRs.

isn't it just a little harder on both clutch wear, and the tranny itself? Â*I thought I have heard that before. Â* Â*It doesnt seem like it would be bad Â*per say on the street on normal driving, but I can see how it would be bad to downshift like that with out a heel-toe or rev match at the track.

improper down shifting is different than engine braking

I agree 100%. Ive never heard of any harm coming from engine braking. Down shifting without rev matching while driving aggressively will put wear on the clutch.

engine breaking meaning just keeping the car in its current gear while slowing down... kinda like riding the gear down to a lower speed?

yes, thats my definition of engine braking at least

^^ Yea same here. i guess i assumed he meant hard downshifting.

that's what I have been doing in the 3 years and 95k miles with no problems

yea i know thats not harmful.

Yah I'm talking about folks that are down shifting and dont rev match. Causes the car to lurch while the car tries to match speeds.

Slowing down in gear causes no issues at all. What I'm talking about is folks that are coming off the freeway in fifth and then just pop it in fourth and let the clutch go with no throttle blip.

Haha everytime I heel-toe downshift or Rev match my car, some ricer or Mustang always thinks I'm reving on him. I hate that.

And then they take off really fast thinking they are racing with you, but in reality they are only racing with themlseves. Then they just feel stupid = D

Exactly!!! And it happens a lot to me, then next thing I know I see I'm gettin paced on the road by the person next to me. haha its like dood.... i wasn't flexing on you, I'm tryna save wear and tear on my car bro! Calm the fuck down!

Seems like if you even told some people what you were doing, they probably wouldnt even know what it was you were talking about. Its cool though when other tuner see and hear it cause they know wsup. The funny ones is when they're not that good at their Heel toe, and you can hear the revs climb since they didnt blip the gas enough

I run 11.0-10.8 afr, depending on what the car likes.
