What is it?
2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

What's special about it?
If we were making a list of things to do before dying, owning a Lancer Evolution would be in the top 50, if not the top 10. For those who can't afford to spend $35,000, we would have previously advised curling up in the fetal position with a PS2 and a copy of Gran Turismo 4. Now, however, we can suggest the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, which looks to be a legitimate Evo Lite.

Unlike the last Ralliart, this one starts with the right drivetrain parts — genuine Evo-derived stuff. Instead of a dull, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine, it has a detuned version of the Evo X's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for an estimated 235 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Compare this to 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque in Subaru's Impreza WRX.

Although we had expected Mitsubishi to stick with a conventional five-speed manual gearbox in the Lancer Ralliart, it now appears the company will offer only its six-speed Twin Clutch-Sequential Sportshift Transmission (TC-SST), which we've found quite effective in the Evo X MR.

The dual-clutch gearbox drives all four of the '09 Lancer Ralliart's wheels through an all-wheel-drive system with an active center differential. Just as in the Evo VIII, IX and X, the driver can choose from Tarmac, Gravel and Snow driving modes. Although the Ralliart won't have the Evo X's Active Yaw Control (AYC) feature, it still has a mechanical rear limited-slip differential and a helical LSD up front.

Mitsubishi hasn't gotten specific about suspension changes on the 2009 Ralliart, and the showcar wears the same P215/45R18 Dunlop SP Sport 5000M all-season tires as our long-term '08 Lancer GTS. However, we'd be very surprised if the company didn't offer a summer tire option for the Ralliart.

What's Edmunds' take?
We're a little disappointed the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart won't have a normal manual transmission. Even with the sophisticated automated sequential gearbox, though, this is probably the car that will drive the soggy WRX to an early refresh.

I must admit, this little beast is looking to be a great car for the money. I'd guess launch MSRP to be $24,995 and fully loaded with Recaros, HID's to be around $28,995. If the Evo X didn't exist, I'd be getting this for sure.

I think this is now the best car for the money, and it was genious of Mitsubishi to release something not quite as big as an Evo but better then their regular Lancer.

Evo IX drivetrain, Evo X tranny,Â*AWD, & Turbo for $25k??Â* Anyone who is currently looking for a DD looking at this as a real option?

 lol, I see.

It looks alright. More modding potential seems to be with the Lancer though as it shares parts with the Evo.

I predict this cars going to make all the tuners rich...now everyones gonna have a damn mitsu turbo with that very low entry price. I cant say im that tempted to jump in a new evo at this point because of the price, but I would trade way down to this, have fun.. save some cash. :D

Thats the power of marketing, there are enought talented people around here to put together a bullet proof business plan.

Just throwing this out without much thought, If groups of shops were able to combine their efforts under one umbrella with a distintive brand and marketing appeal, they would be able invest more R&D into the engineering aspect, making intakes, exhaust, cams wheels etc, of a high quality..while picking up a brand premium from this new image they have created... all the money is in the brand premium aspect of this business...however your cant build it without enough cooperation from other tuners.

Well, more nimble than the current one. The 350z is 3600lbs. They're going to shave it down a couple of hundred lbs, reduce the size of the car, give it a facelift and the bigger 3.7 motor.

We'll see what the end result is like but so far it looks like a good deal. And RWD throttle steer is always fun.

Your probably right.

It'll weight as much if not heavier then the MR seeing as how it wont benefit from the MR's aluminum roof, aluminium panels, 2 piece rotors, etc. and adds the massive weight of the MR's tranny.

Well, maybe, the only major parts are a smaller turbo, smaller intercooler, and smaller cams.

So maybe a couple thousand can bring you up to par? Who knows.

AWDrift
03-24-2008, 07:44 PM
if someones selling a turbo, cam, and intercooler. you probably got:

X turbo: ~$600
X IC: ~$200
X cams: ~$100
tune: ~$300

ralliart guys could spend a little over a grand and probably be matching the X performance wise...in a straight line. idk how much better the X's suspension is.

I believe it is about the same wieght as the X. Remember that it has the SST tranny that the X MR has. And yes, the X is much wider then the Ralliart. The Ralliart shares the exact same body as the regular '08 Lancers.

they're comparing because the RA is AWD turbo now ;)

Ok so the UK gets a RS. http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc..._evo_x_rs.html
We the RA. Wonder which one would be the best diamond in the ruff
to mod. Really interested to see if the RA will have any weight advantage. Or would a RS provide a more rigid chasis platform for cornering performance.

DirectorSe7en
05-19-2008, 04:39 PM
I personally dont believe we ever will. Unless the Lancer RA tanks, but I highly doubt that.

And since the Lancer RA will have the MR SST Tranny, it'll be as heavy as an Evo with only half the power. You'd have to pour a lot of money into it to get the Evo power.

whtrice
05-19-2008, 04:49 PM
I am positive, at least this year, we don't see a RS too. Boosting power out of the 4B11 I do not think will be that cost prohibative. It looks like it is going to respond very well to mods. I doubt it will weigh as much as a MR which will be laden with options. So for the price difference between the two models it should provide for diverting funds for power upgrades. Be fun to see how people will mod their RA's and X EVO's.

Be fun to see how people will mod their RA's and X EVO's.

my prediction is that once RA's are more rampant and available, the X will be like the Type R in the heyday where they get stolen for their parts.

but yeah i think if the RA is priced out, it's definetly more bang for the buck vs. the X

God, don't even say that.....That's the last thing I want to have to worry about. :(

One of the reasons I bought an Evo and not an STI. No poor wrx owners "shopping" for STI parts in the Mitsu camp.

if someones selling a turbo, cam, and intercooler. you probably got:

X turbo: ~$600
X IC: ~$200
X cams: ~$100
tune: ~$300

ralliart guys could spend a little over a grand and probably be matching the X performance wise...in a straight line. idk how much better the X's suspension is.

cbass i guess you missed my post

aww what no MT?!? weak, very weak. If they are trying to compete with the WRX, they will need to have an MT as well. All these future ricers/tuners will want to have MT.

Maybe Mitsu thinks the SST will be the next "big thing" which is why they aren't offering it? And if it fails to catch on, they would offer a 5 Speed MT for the Lancer RA and Evo X MR?

Get in on the upgraded trans and flywheel business now. I can see the pile of transmissions building as quick as Subie blocks. Bryan you can be the new West coast Shep!!

Paul L is already the West coast Shep. :)

Can you be the Nor Cal Buschur?

Does this mean Bryan is going to start making youtube videos? Tell you quite honestly, I do enjoy watching the dynoflash videos. They're pretty funny

You know, come to think of it, isnt this question an oxymoron? Your asking evo enthusiasts to choose between the X and the STi in an Evo forum? LMAO. Well just to let you know I did vote for the X. hahahahaha
