Did some testing today for the Evo X version of the GST Cone filter upgrade.

Amazed at the results so far...

Average +22whp / +22wtq gains!

Not only great power gains but it also greatly smoothed out the hiccups that the stock Evo X seems to have. Still uses the OEM factory air scoop and lid that brings in cool fresh air from the front of the vehicle.

More testing coming, and these filters will be available very soon. ;)

Stock vs GST open filter:

http://www.norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/evo10_gst_filter_031408/stock_vs_filter.jpg

The average +22whp/+22wtq was taken at 5400 rpm. The bump in power at 6500 is from a littler leaner AFR and holding boost

2 pulls back to back with filter:

AFR and boost between stock and filter, dotted lines are stock:

http://www.norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/evo10_gst_filter_031408/stock_vs_filterAFR_BOOST.jpg

As you can see the filter let the car run more boost through the midrange but it looks like the ECU brought it back down at 6500. AFR's are about the same until 5500 rpm or so, where they go a little leaner, maybe max .3 AFR, but still in the low 10's.

------------------------------------------------

Then I put on some boost control just for giggles and the Evo X made an additional 26whp to make it 280whp. Matched the OEM boost peak of 23.5psi. However I think the turbo held a bit too much boost up top for the factory tune as the curves weren't the smoothest.

Brought the boost control down to 22psi peak (less than stock), but still held a bit more than stock up top. Did four runs back to back, smoother curves and average was 275whp. That is a 44whp gain over stock.

I can't wait to start tuning these suckers.

Off Topic; I snapped a pic of Bryan at work earlier. If he doesn't reply to your posts, this is why;

Unfortunatly no. The Evo 8 and 9 use the Mitsu Karman Vortex MAF which uses a 4 bolt pattern that our Evo 8/9 GST filter uses to bolt directly to the MAF, which makes our filter not mess with MAF readings like some filters with adapters. The Evo X uses a Hot Wire MAF with a different design of air filter.

We are still waiting on the 8/9 filters to ship. We are trying, it's been a frustrating experience. We will let everyone know as soon as they come in. In the mean time we will be testing a alternate filter for the 8/9 that might work for now.

Dude, is this on a stock Evo?

^Yup. All he did was Cone filter and MBC.

See why I'm hyping the X so damn bad? Little $$ = Big time numbers.

+22whp / +22wtq is 100% stock Evo X with just our filter.

The +44whp is 100% stock Evo X with our filter and a boost controller set at 22psi (stock is 23.5-24psi) I put on for just giggles. The Evo X really needs some tuning before boost is raised imho.

^Eric@AMS said it was safe to run at least 22psi on a MBC safely without a tune. Do you recommend against having now seen it run?

Wow! So when is GST gonna offer a 4B11 swap into the CT9A chassis?

They also have 93 octane. When I had the MBC set to match stock peak boost (23.5-24psi) the curves looked a bit funky and it was pulling some timing. When I bought down the MBC to 22psi the curves where smooth again. At 22psi peak it held 17.5 psi. Stock holds around 13psi.

I have a CAN logger for the Evo X but unfortunatly I had some issues today so I couldn't do any logging. I am hoping to have this fixed for the next couple Evo X's we will have in for testing. Then I will know exactly what is going on. But from my experience the curves at 23.5-24psi looked like some timing was being pulled.

I still think the car should be tuned properly before upping boost on 91 octane.

Makes sense.

[off topic] Are any tuning companies far along in releasing a tuning software for the X yet?

EcuTek very soon. COBB should be out shortly.

Btw, AFR's are still in the uber rich high 9's - 10:1AFR.

I am thinking two versions at this point. ;) Budget to keep the theme and normal for some added luxury. ;)

I think the latter will do better despite it's cheaper alternative. Especially if there's some benefit to paying the extra $$.

I agree. Working on some heat shielding as the intake is close to the coolant line.

Hey Bryan..By just adding more boost do you see AFR's come down typically and have to be readjusted back up?

Depends on how the tune is. Usually more boost = more load so it runs richer as the higher load cells are usually richer. However it usually means more airflow as well so there is some balance.

When I put the boost controller on it ran richer up top.

Did some extensive testing today on some air filter setups with a Evo X with the new Mitsubishi "factory reflash".

The new Mitsubishi MAF is one sensitive little bugger. One setup lost 23whp/20wtq over the stock airbox and stock filter!

I'll be start a new thread very soon with data and more information. We did this testing so we can offer the best open filter kit possible to you guys.
