I just replaced mine cause it basically exploded into about 4 pieces and it was actually pretty damn hard to get to and to get out so I wouldn't expect it to be cheap. GST and SE are your best bet regardless of where your located.

It says Bay Area, CA in his profile.

Yea best bet is to find out how many hours of labor it takes,
so in case u take it to elsewhere, u won't get rip off for the labor cost.

like I said hit up GST or SE. They are the only ones in the area I would trust to work on my car.

Stevo8, did you do it yourself? if so, did you take the alternator out from the top or bottom?

I don't really know how it SHOULD come out cause my situation is a bit different. I was in the process of taking out my motor/trans/tc, so I just dropped it out the bottom since there was no suspension and such in the way.. From what it looked like from the top it might be hard to get it past the abs unit but I really didnt put much thought into it so I could be way off base with that assumption. Just hit up SE or GST and let them take care of it.

Give Greg a call at the shop and he will be more than happy to discuss! 510.264.9049

p.s. Greg is a better guy to talk to about service as I just stand around and annoy Tommy and Mert until a car is strapped down on the dyno. ;)

Why did your alternator fail?

steevo8
05-15-2008, 10:45 PM
cause there was a part that was missing... I think you left before I had a chance to show you... It actually got kinda ugly

damn sorry to hear, thats not a normal part that fails. Is that what caused your powersteering pully to fail as well?

yea... I don't think the Alter. will come out either from the top or the bottom w/o taking anything else out.

Damn it takes that long. Thought it would be just like taking it off from the DSM and EVO I-III 4g63s

That was one of the things that I noticed when I first looked around in the engine bay, the alternator is back near the firewall since they turned the engine around. In a DSM it wasn't so bad, I can do a R&R in under an hour now (usually 30 minutes). My 2G is on its second, probably will be a 3rd one soon.

Is it true, for those of us with turbo timers or love to keep it idle, that our alternators will go out quicker? Reasoning would be that because the car is idle and not in a moving state it is running off the alternator (or something. IDK I heard from a friend).

When the car is running, it's always off the alternator.

damn with all the technology goes into evo, seem like they make it harder for average joe to work on the car...

how many bolts hold the alternator onto the engine? looks like it's only 2...

MarkSAE

It should be 3 or 4 bolts..
