may I ask why cannon?

cause I am use to all the controls, I have some canon gear, I also have several friends with canons so I can use their gear, lenses are more available etc. On top of that, I really wasn't impressed with the couple of nikons I have used.

what would be similar to a 40d from nikon and what's the price difference? I am seeing used 40d's for about $800 for the body now. What could I get and should I be looking for IF I went with a nikon?

You should be able to get into a used D200 for that price.

Just went and played with a 200d and as much as I wanted to like it, I'm not sold at all. For less money the 30d performs better at high ISO/low light and the auto focus is much sharper as well. I don't do large prints so the 1.? Mp difference doesn't matter to me. The only thing I liked about the nikon was the little bit extra height but that doesn't matter after a battery grip. If I could afford a 40d it would hands down be a no brainer for me but even still I think I'll go with a 20d/30d over the 200d. There's a camera show next Sunday I'll most likely just hold off till then and see what kinds of deals I can pick up.

cool deal
I have found that Nikon and Canon are close enough that all it comes down to is personal choice.

I agree for the most part but some things that are real nit picky stand out more so depending on the use. I shoot a lot of low light stuff and so the canon stood out considerably over the d200 FOR ME. That one little thing would have been the selling point for me if it was flipped the other way as well.

true, for low light you really need a D3 or D700...
But such is life in the photography world.

I am seeing used 40d's for about $800 for the body now.

i thought someone recently posted a link to a new 40d for 1k.

edit: i just found the 40d(body only) on amazon for 939

says too low to list but if you add it to the cart it will give you the price...

oh, i thought you were thinking about spending 800 for a used one. i figured it's probably worth the extra 140 for a new one.
i'll see if anyone is getting rid of one at work. also some people may be waiting for the new 5d to come out before getting out of their current camera. once that one hits the market you might see a bump in used 30d/40d/5d's available.

30D is a great camera. if you can't spring for the 40D.. the 30D is no slouch at all. however, if you had the choice, and money wasn't an object, i'd choose the 40D hands down.

btw, this is all coming from a 30D owner... who may sell it soon to spring for the 5D.

how much is the new 5D going to be?

I set my budget at $800 and I'm going to stick with that cause I don't want to start the whole "well _____ camera is only this much more so I might as well just get that. Oh well shit if I'm going to spend that much now I might as well just get the _____ camera" <-- that whole thing tends to be my down fall and to be honest I could get by and take awesome pics with another regular old canon xt and some decent lenses so I expect to turn out some really nice stuff with a 20d/30d if I can't get a 40d in my price range.

have you looked into the new xti. it's supposed to be pretty nice as well.
a friend at work just picked one up and he seems happy with it.

you mean the new xSi? I have and it looks like a great camera but I kinda like the D series controls a little better, on top of that it uses a sd card instead of a cf which wouldn't matter other then I already have some cf cards. Its very tempting though cause for a little over $800 it comes with a 18-55 stabilized lens which I wouldn't mind having.

5D is about $2k new for the body alone.

I definitely like the D controls over the X series controls. Having the dual wheels to adjust aperture and shutter speed simultaneously is great.

bump.. Trying to pic something up tomorrow. Low balled a guy on a 30d and a 28-135 IS USM and he sounds like he might go for it. Offered him $700 for both  but if that falls through I got no solid leads.

I went through the whole debate between the 30D, 40D, 5D, and X series, as I have the original 10D. I ended up getting the 40D with lens kit and sold the lens. Worked out great for me, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking I should of gotten a 5D or wait for the new 5D if one comes out.
I am very happy with my 40D. There are currently rebates on all the cameras and had to hold back on getting some more 2.8L lenes. The rebates only come around once a year. If you are really broke or cheap, you can always spend $10 and buy a 15% off coupon from ebay. It would be well worth it for an 40D. Becareful as not all coupons work with cameras though.

Good Luck.

BTW. I thought you got something already?

well I havent yet actually purchased it yet but I am talking to some people on a couple different things.. Might end up waiting till I can sell this XTI that fell in my lap and then just get a 40D with kit lens... I REALLY like that lens for a walk around lens BUT if I just buy the body Im not too far off just getting a nice L for a multi use lens OR I can just get a 30D and a few lenses. A 20 or 30d with a L is still one hell of a performer and I really think I would be better off in the long run spending money on glass over a body.
