Here's a shot with a 13 sec exposure on a tripod that I posted in another thread. I figured I'd might as well post it in here. This was taking with my D50 and the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and a $40 tripod from Wolf's Camera. I was going to get a 50mm f/1.8 lens but they're on back order :( I will be getting a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 instead :P

Still have it. I didn't get the MR. I did want to though. My total debt would've been too much. I do have a new loan ready to go though :P I am going to go look at a TB IX and maybe the RR IX RS.

Thanks for the heads up man! How do you like yours? What camera are you shooting with?

What is the advantage of the long exposure? Looks really grainy to me, is this because of the resizing to post here?

I used the long exposure to gather the natural light rather than to use the flash. Longer exposure shots are what I've been into lately. I think you are correct about the resizing. If you look at the original hosted size it doesn't look as if it has jagged edges. Be sure to left click on the image so it's as big as it's supposed to be and you'll see the lines are straighter.

Here's a noisey (grainy) shot that I took a few months back. The exposure was 30 seconds and you couldn't see any of this with your bare eye. It was gathering all available light.

^^Wow, that Santa Cruiz pic is beautiful. When you say "and you couldn't see any of this with your bare eye", do you mean it was in the middle of the night?

Yup it was after the sunset 8pm-9pm if I remember correctly and my crappy kit lens took 30 seconds to gather all avail light. I believe I did auto contrast and auto colors in photoshop afterwards. I don't have a ton of experience with photoshop so I just stick to the basics. Here are some others from the same night. The first was not long after the sunset as you can see the glow.

I'm loving the first one. Did you use "BULB" or did you let the camera figure out the shutter speed?

I set it for 30 seconds in manual mode with auto focus on a tripod. I used the timer to take the shot to make sure it was nice and steady. One more click to the left on the dial displayed "BULB". Don't photographers use that to take a overnight exposure? I am sorry to say I've never played with it before.

I don't think "Bulb" is really used for any specific type of shot, but if you plan on doing a lot of long shutter shots I'd recommend getting a remote switch. This way you don't have to wait for the 2-10 second timer, and your able to lock up the shutter in "Bulb" if you ever decide to use it.

I know they make a remote that works with my D50 and I am planning on sticking with Nikon when I do a body upgrade in the future. Maybe a used D2x but I'm really feelin' the D300 :P So you control the shutter speed on bulb? If you want to do a 10min exposure and grab a midnight snack you can do that?

Yes, with the remote switch you can just set it and forget it. The remote has a lock that holds the shutter button down for as long as you want.
