im looking into upgrading my sigma 70-300mm for something similar but something the fixes the shakes :P  i was looking into this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O161X0/ref=s9sdps_c4_114_img1-rfc_g1-frt_p-3215_p-3102_p?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=0HE251TEFB35DRDTEWBA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=436516801&pf_rd_i=507846) for a good all around lens specially when one of my daughters goes on pageants.or maybe this one (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-70-300mm-4-5-5-6G-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000HJPK2C/ref=pd_sim_p_33) as long as it doesnt break the $500 mark

under $500 and IS is hard... For the money though your best choice IMO is the 28-135IS USM. U can get them on CL all day for $350 or less. It can't replace the 70-300 but it's a MUCH better lens at the lengths it does cover.

lol I'm confused. Marcel you have a Nikon or a Canon? [edit] gonna assume you own a Nikon since that's what you looked up. :P

You might want to check out Sigma's other lenses with OS capabilities. Like so:
http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-18-200mm-3-5-6-3-Optical-Stabilizer/dp/B000NOSCGM

Nikon's version is a lil more expensive but it was the first of it's kind:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-18-200mm-3-5-5-6-ED-IF-Zoom-Nikkor/dp/B000BY52NU

^ This is the lens I used on the Hong Kong trip. It works well in dark situations but the VR has it's limits. You still need to run higher shutter speeds to get solid stills as the VR helps with the stabilization of the frame not the subject. Even if the price is high I strongly recommend this lens. 8)

haha OR you could get THIS lens and be the coolest dad in the building! >:]

I forgot to post a link about the photo fair in San Jose yesterday. They are having another on February 7, 2009 at the Napredak Hall from 9:30am-3:30pm photofair.com (http://www.photofair.com)

There was a lot of cool stuff there. I checked out this O.G. Nikon D1X and I felt like a newspaper photographer with that monster in my hands. They had a bunch of stuff there. They even had the D90 (1st DSLR to record HD video) and a super nice 80-400 VR lens. Here are some pics. Marcel I will post if anything like this pops up again.

They had this one older Pro pre VR lens (70-200 f/2.8) that must of weighed 10 lbs and the guy wanted $1,500 for it and it wasn't in the best physical shape but it looked mean :P I think it was one of those $5,000 lenses back in it's day.
