Someone posted this a while back. Thanks for posting it again as it has been a few months. I know this site used to have no deposits but I am not sure if this is still in effect.

They used to have it where you could go to their locations (San Mateo is one) to pick up whatever items you're renting to avoid the fees.

There is a place in Palo Alto that rents DSLRs and lenses, called Keeble and Schuchat. Don't know about prices though:

Keeble and Schuchat are an ok rental place, but most of the time you have to rent things in kits, and your not going to find a lot of the same lenses. Although I have yet to rent anything, I've sold a few lenses to them, and from what everyone states on a few other forums they are really good guys. I know I posted it before, but if you guys ever check out soocool.com/forum the owner some times gives local people a chance to try new equipment "In store." The owner has even been known to take out a few peices of equipment to local meets, so people can try shooting with the equipment in real life situations.

And yes, local pickup is an option..
