Sup guys,

I'm here from Socal, and was wondering if there are any good canyon roads in Northern California that is relatively scarce of traffic and patrol. Canyon practice requires different techniques from street, track, atuocross, or rally and can help broaden driving skills. Was at Berkely Hills six months ago, and saw a lot of cars( Mainly FWD) making runs up and down the hill. Canyons are tailored to our AWD and turbocharged Evo's, which would allow us to make runs faster and safer. It could also possibly provide a good venue or activity for future meets.

like touge in japan? like the anime initial D? sounds interesting but havent noticed too many canyon runs up here in sac. maybe towards the bay, like san jose/saratoga off of N280.

if there were any, id be down for some meets. not sure how well i would do, but im always down. highway 9/skyline in saratoga is prolly the closest ive driven on to being a "mountain run." that stretch of road is hella fun to drive on. on the top of the run, theres a little parking area for motorists and pass that is the top of the hill, "skyline" i believe...awesome view in the day, beautiful at nite. on clear nites, you can see bay area bridges.

Here's something you might enjoy: http://www.geektimes.com/michael/techno/wheels/bmw/events/2003-03-twisties.html

50 Miles of Pure Twisties

Feel like cruising through 7 different canyon roads equaling out to almost 50 miles of pure twisties? Bay Bimmerz will be traveling from Milpitas to Berkeley without ever taking a main road or highway.

We'll begin this trek at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Milpitas and make our way through
Calaveras Rd
Sunol Blvd
Palomares Canyon Rd
Redwood Rd
Pinehurst Rd
Skyline Blvd
and finally to Grizzly Peak Rd!!![/list:u]
Be careful out there... and have fun! :driving:

This looks like a good drive for the people that is coming from Sac. that is going to the Hayward meet. Since we might not be able to drive with the rest of the pack coming from Milpitas to Hayward, we can have our little drive also and meet at the shop. What do you guys think.

If you plan on really "driving" these roads, I would reccomend that you do them late at night. During the summer I only go up between the hours of 1 and 4 on weekdays. Weekends are totally out of the question! Be careful, be smart, and look out for cops.

Man let me tell you there are planty of good roads here in the sac area you just need to know the right peeps. for starters there is highway 49. wich has a ton of backroads with switchbacks from hell. the you can head out to placervill wich has a lot of the same. hit me and shaggy up some sat night we meet at the tacobell/pizzahut on sunrise and winding way every sat at 9:30 and leave around 10-10:30 to drive the twistys. he knows all the spots i just fallow and enjoy. and yes we bouth have underpowered lancers but on a downhill to much power can kill you

Warning guys, I regularly drive the Redwood Road route safe speeds (within 5 of the limit), and they use a local police chopper flying VERY low, with an unmarked Crown Victoria following a few turns back. Speeding not advisable.

Beware of animals on the backroads, especially at night. I've had my fair share of close calls.
Also keep in mind the conditions of the road- gravel=slipping= slamming your car into a dirt bank=crying.

Patterson Pass Rd is one that I used to take when I lived in Tracy cuz there were hella traffic on hwy 580 & 205. It's one way road for 2 way traffic so it is little dangerous. But you'll have real fun if you can be aware of that situation.
I actually took Patterson this morning into work. Sometimes 580 can be a pain in the a$$. Only problem is the guy in front of me was pushing his escort to the limit  , so I just stayed back until I could pass. I had a friend who ran into a semi out there. Definitely keep your eyes open on this one.

Togues are rare in these parts...or are they? There is a great one here in Fresno a few miles up. If you are ever in Fresno, take 41 North and exit on Friant Rd. Take Friant Rd up to Table Mountain Casino. Make the first left that you can before you get to the Table Mountain Casino parking lot. Its called Sky Harbor. This Mini-Togue is awesome it starts at a huge uphill like a rollercoaster ride all along the side of the casino. Then you hit the lil mountain pass. Its a few miles long and you hit a culdesac in the end. If you run late at night no ones around, use your high beams though. You dont want to fly off the edge or run into that couple in the "parked car" with foggy windows. I took my Evo there lastnight with a video cam and it kicked very much ass. Too bad I had a full house, front seats and back. If youre in the area/nearby, check it out.

Fun roads, lots of high speed sweepers. :) I've done that many times when I used to live in Davis. Even now my friend and I do a loop from SF through Napa through Lake Berryessa and back. We leave at 5 am in the morning and make it back in time for brunch.

Mines Rd in Livermore is a great road to drive on. Just make sure you have a full tank of gas because there's no gas stations anywhere over there.

I'd vote for this thread being deleted. Advertising driving fast on certain public roads does no one any good. I sure as hell would be pissed off If I suddenly saw a bunch of "dr!ft-squids" on my favorite roads all of a sudden. Knowing that would be a sure way to guarantee more CHP patrolling that road in the future. :? :?

Chill out dude...Not everyone that goes up to the canyons drives like a total asshole putting everyones lives in danger, just worry about yourself and put the internet police badge away...Sorry but come on I hear people crying about this all the time...

thats the thing tho people who just goes there to enjoy the road and drive casually, they still get into trouble because of retarded and idiotic drivers who gets the cops attentions.car profiling is a bad issue right now and it affects a good amount of people.

honestly this thread is against "forum conduct" guidlines posted by coolguy949

http://www.norcalevo.net/forum/index.php/topic,10728.0.html

twisty roads are fun to drive on safely, but anything more than casual driving on blind turns is rediculous because you are putting other peoples lives in danger. When it comes to threshold driving, the yellow and white lines aren't all that easy to stay between, and head-on collisions are not fun.... trust me.

However, i'd agree with the defense that it can be safer at night(less traffic and more importantly headlights)

I was driving down Calaveras Rd. a few weeks ago and I see cop lights and Im like oh shit he's speed trapping people. But as I slowed down and I drove by I see a AE86 on my right smashed in by a power tower. It was a pretty crazy sight.

Hit up 85 and exit Saratoga, head on up until it turns to hwy 9. Nice cruize up the mountain with some gentle turns to get you warmed up. Take a right on Skyline for a relatively easy drive with some nice scenery. Hang a left on Alpine Road (opposite Page Mill Road). Alpine is where the hard driving begins, even at speed limit, this downhill stretch road gets very fun and very narrow in places. Once you come out on Pescadero Road, hang a left to head out towards highway 1 (I recommend hitting up Duartes Tavern, on the right about a mile before Pescadero hits HWY1 - great food), or you can hang a right to hit La Honda which turns into Woodside and gets you back over to 280. The diner at the top where La Honda meets skyline is also another great place to eat.

If anyone wants to drive up there with me one day, please feel free to PM, I try to drive mountains regularly.

**edit** guess thats not really canyons now, is it.. Well, theres some valleys and downhill, so nuff said :P

So why hasn't this thread been deleted yet? :x

Posting roads is a BAD IDEA guys, as th more they are advertised, the more traffic and morons will be on those roads, and that will eventually mean more regular CHP patrols ON THOSE ROADS. Doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.... :?

well a place no one has mentioned yet is the Muir Woods back road which leads to Stinson Beach. you wouldnt believe how twisty it gets. left right left right every second for a very....very....very long time. It is about a half an hour of fun just going one way, then you get to come back for another 30 min. caution, your tires will get worn, and if you dont brake or downshift before the constant sharp turns, you will come extremely close to an accident on this road. i live close to it so i get loads of practice. so much fucking fun!!!!!!
