Bryan do you plan on tuning the 4B11 engine to the same tolerances you've set with 4g63?

or do you plan to make the initial tunes more aggressive or less aggressive than the 4g63?

It is indeed a new platform and I will be treating is as such. Over 16 years of 4G63 experience for sure helped with the Evo 8-9. ;)

Had a X on the dyno today.

So far so good for beta testing EcuFlash. Works great. Just waiting on a couple things and some more testing and we should be good to go! :)

Good news is it looks like the stock boost system can hold some decent boost without upgrading the system yet. On a stock car I was seeing more than 4psi up top over the stock maps.

Teaser: 270whp/272wtq on a stock X with more to go. ;)

what's the baseline, bryan?

earlyapex aka jack ass
10-24-2008, 08:35 PM
baseline was 247/256

Strong X.

Forgot it also has the Works drop in filter, which it was baselined with.

We did a couple runs with the stock filter. Works filter gained around 15whp over stock filter if I recall correctly. So 232whp or so 100% bone stock

lmao.

Yes, it seems that mivec tuning had even more effect on the 10's then it did on the 9's. The USDM mivec maps are very "tame" compared to the JDM ones, even making that change helped a ton with spool and torque.

Will the MR tune be ready as well? I've heard that over a 50wtq gain and the SST will start noticeably slipping. Is there any way to create an MR tune where the torque curve is more gradual like a NA car to relieve the stress on the SST?

Well, the more I get through the more we will see the variation. Just like the 8's and 9's, I'm sure everyone will be different.

This tune is far from aggressive. AFR is still rich (under 11 AFR) but of course not pig rich like stock (In the 9's). Peak boost is only 23psi and I have it tapering to around 17psi at 7200rpm

Here is the overlay:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/devX_110108/evoX_stockTune_power.jpg

There is more room to tune the spool area. Already 600+rpm quicker and huge gains under the spool curve area. I am going to be working on this area more, I think there is more potential.

20 psi by 3100 rpm in 3rd so far

I'm not sure yet. I doubt it, could be close though. 290-295 maybe?

With a open filter I think it might hit 300.

Another quick question> will the gas mileage improves after tuning?

I would imagine if you drive the car like you stole it, in other words, having fun with your Evo, then yes your mileage will be better after tuning as the AFR isn't pig rich anymore.

I won't make inflated/ non-data backed claims like 30% better mileage or whatever. At cruise and under light load it's going to act like it did stock, the computer is always targeting 14.7:1 AFR and it uses fuel trims to hit it. Timing will be tweaked at cruise however and this will increase gas mileage slightly.

Spent a little more time today with the X on the street.

Spooling a little quicker now. It really feels like a Evo now after tuning it. With the stock tune the car felt just as fast at 50% throttle as it did at 100%. Now it actually pulls until you have to shift.

I'm really really warming up to the X now. The chassis feels great.

Not sure what all the fuss was about CEL's popping up after tuning these X's on EvoM. I tried my best to get something to come on. I heard all these horror stories of the dash turning into the 4th of July after upping the boost and tuning the car. All I saw where the cute little SAWC animations pretty much everytime I put the throttle down. ;)

Asc off = throttle pullback and stability braking at all 4 corners not be utilized. AYC will use the rear brakes on the inside wheel during cornering.

ASC Off (3 sec held) - all of above + AYC will not use the brakes at all.

ACD and AYC is always on regardless and will try to control the slide always.

I don't actually know if that will come to be, it is actually something I would like in the future. I would prefer on the GSR the Outside Temp to be in the same location as the MR display and instead when on the SAWC mode show a Digital Speed. Outside Temp on SAWC display is useless.

new tune is amazing.. I'm going to replace the plugs today..... I tried doing a few consecutive pulls and that 'misfire noise' got more frequent... after 3 pulls it was really loud and apparent after 5K RPM. Last night i pulled a couple and they were pretty brown....

anybody else having a vibration/puffing noise high end?

i'll report back with new plugs, hopefully this helps.

In terms of the tune, bryan did an amazing job. The spool is ridiculous and it actually PULLS and BUILDS power to redline. Car really feels like an evo now =D

In terms of the tune, bryan did an amazing job. The spool is ridiculous and it actually PULLS and BUILDS power to redline. Car really feels like an evo now =D

yeah always 91...

i took the evo out this morning and it didn't do it for a couple pulls and the power is totally smooth! I wonder if it was just turbulent air on the freeway last night. On the stock tune it was definitely there, I guess I''ll just have to go to a tunnel or something and see if I can hear it at WOT.

You guys should set an appointment as soon as Bryan makes the announcement. This is really how the car should have come from the factory!

Jeff I would just get new plugs. Yours is the first X where I have heard/seen that issue.

Since the X runs low 9 AFR stock I wouldn't be surprised if the plugs are fouled. They didn't look so hot when I pulled them that first time.

No resolution yet, we didn't have a boost gauge to test but I'm sure we'll have it resolved soon. This is not a result of the tune BTW...it just came to our attention during the dyno sessions.

So, just got back from GST...again I have to thank Bryan, he's an absolute magician with Evos. :D

My "leak" turned out to be a troublesome factory boost pill. Mods are listed in my sig, after installing the GST boost pill the car put out an impressive 305hp and 305 tq. I'll scan the sheets when I can, but I'm sure Bryan will post them eventually. After some discussion with Bryan, we've come to the conclusion that the factory cat is definitely the bottleneck...no matter what exhaust you're running. If you haven't seen the X cat...take a look you'll be shocked as to how big that sucker is.

So essentially, my car just has the drop in and the hot pipe installed. We saw a huge jump in torque really early (about 3500rpm) which may be due to the solid hot pipe.

In the end, you'd be doing yourself a HUGE injustice by not paying Bryan@GST a visit. :D

very nice mike... glad you had your boost issue sorted out! i'll probably go in for a boost pill update etc soon. the power was actually already great at thunderhill the way it is now. I only really felt the need for more in those awkward passes on corvettes/porsches etc when they don't lift at all for you =P

Moostafa29
11-25-2008, 08:46 AM
Yeah, the factory CAT is huge. That sucker weighs like 30-40lbs too. I just went with a high flow CAT, as it still flows well, and is not too loud at all.

It's been almost a year since owning this car(Jan 20th 2008). I got it dynoed at GST with factory parts and tune back on 1/26/2008 with 242 wtq/219 whp (found my old dynos!). Now almost a year later with GST boost assembly, K&N drop-in and the full Upper and Lower Nisei IC kit and a GST custom tune by conservative Carebear Bryan it now has 309 wtq / 295 whp today 2/16/2008.

A massive Difference of 67 wtq / 76 whp!

wish i had overlays of stock vs tuned :(

Hey All,
Well today was the day I finally had the opportunity, and $$$ to acquire a worthwhile mod. I took my 2008 Evo MR to GST Motorsports and had Bryan apply the base map flash on my car. All I can say is this is how the car should have arrived from the factory!!! Car drives smoother, and while it's not quite a beast like the Evo X GSRs and past Evos, the car really has improved as a daily driver, shifting smoother and is slightly less thirsty than in the past. Thanks Bryan for the base map! Amazing work!

Is it ok to assume the car comes rich from the factory (hella hecka hyphy thizz face) so you just got you a/f leaned out? How much was the price? I'm grabbing an evo when i get back, so i would be interested in such glorious tuneage.
