Hi i am in the marketing of purchasing a DSLR camera for me and my girlfriend to use. Currently we got our eyes set on the Nikon D80. Do you guys recommend buying it or a different brand/model, my budget is just about the price of the d80. We're just n00bs when it just comes to photography.

Well although Ill be upgrading shortly Im not selling my 20D as it's one hell of a great body and not worth a ton of $$$. I would suggest though that if your not already a nikon owner/user you check out the canon 40D. The 5D mark II just came out so there's a whole bunch of camera dorks that think they need it and are selling their 40D's for in the $700 range. It's an amazing body for that price to say the least. Same with the canon 20D since it can be had for about $300. I know some people that are still making a lot of money with their 20D even after 100,000 clicks.

I honestly don't know why Canon released the 50D so soon after realeasing the 40D...

I have a D80 but not selling (yet lol). You can find pretty good deals on the D80 on craigslist if you're still looking into it. Since you know Charlie you should get together and give the camera a test run. I haven't really used the auto settings but the auto dial is there for a reason. :) And to be extra thorough, go to best buy and try out the other brands. Canon's 40D is ultra cheap now as Steve pointed out. You could also look at the Sony Alpha 350 (or something like that..).

This is probably just me but Ritz/Wolfe Camera is way over priced and I haven't been impressed by their customer service either.

Have you considered D90?

Check out this review. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm

the XSI is newer than the D80 and I think it's smarter than the D80.

I think the XSI is on the same level as the D40/40x/60 and the XS is just above? I'm not entirely certain with Canon's XS series. lol
