Traded some lady for a 17-40L the other day and went to the coast with it today. Just uploaded the shots and am pretty damn impressed. Been reading about this lens for landscapes for a long time and it sure didnt let me down. Shots have little editing. Shot in RAW and took about 5min each to dial in colors. The colors are so rich with this lens and my new to me 40D that I didnt have to do much at all.

Beautiful pics Steve! Very impressed with the quality...especially if they have little editing as well.

Thanks Brandon, they were shot in raw so automatically they need to be processed but I didnt clone anything, dodge, etc. Just hue/sat/contrast and brightness. With my old lens theres no way colors would have come out like that, thats for sure.

I'm looking into get a really nice camera to do some stuff like this. Shoot me a PM with your opinion on a good camera that's "reasonably" priced if you don't mind!

A new lens is around $639.99, and a used copy can be had for around $550.00. If your on a crop body, I'd suggest the Canon 10-22 f/3.5-5.6.

yeah boosted is about right.. Personally I wasn't a huge fan of the 10-22 simply for the price and my style of shooting. (plus I plan to move to full frame later). In a pinch this lens can be forced into walk around duty where as the 10-22 i see as a landscape only lens and not something i see myself using on a full frame. I traded about $500 worth of stuff for this lens. The lady was asking $500obo on it though.

Hey brandon if your new to SLR cameras I would suggest going fairly cheap at first and see if it's for you. Photography is not a point and shoot hobby IMO and not everyone enjoys it enough to continuely invest in it. There's a ton to learn and that will have a much larger effect. Your best bet is to try and get your hands on one and see what you like. The canon semi pro stuff from a couple years ago is real cheap, like the 20D/30D which you can get for a few hundred bucks with a cheapo kit lens that would work for a bit, or you could get a smaller body with a couple less functions with the rebel XT or XTI. I have played with the nikon d70, and d40 and both are nice entry level priced cameras that are worth looking at as well. I absolutely loved my 20D for a $300 body, and with the lens I was shooting with it it's a sub $500 setup.

Great shots Steve. Gotta love those L lenses the optics are so crisp. What is the F of this particular model ?

f/4. I am very impressed for sure and the f/4 doesn't bother me one bit. Coming from a 20D with a f/3.5-5.6 I get better iq with this setup even if I have to reach to higher ISO to get some speed back. Yesterday I shot with my friend who has a couple 2.8's I use and I really had no need for it. For $500 I'm very happy with this lens. Idealy I would like a 28-70L f/2.8, and a 70-200L 2.8 with a 1.4 extended. But both of those are way bank and I wouldn't get a whole ton of use from the 70-200 so it's gonna be awhile for that.

I agree for those types of shots the 2.8 is overkill. Unless you use filters that limit light or want to shoot high speed action in low light. What software are you using to edit in RAW?

CS3 right now... I'm dying to get my hands on a copy of lightroom though.. Can't afford it right now but that will be my next photo purchase.

I think canon bodies are awesome. It's the whole lens/price/availability thing that kills it for me. That and the cheaper canons off a bit better high ISO performance which isn't a big deal to most but pretty big in my book.... The D90 is something I would for sure have dropped coin on if I didn't have a slr and my fiends didn't shoot canon.
