For those who have been disgusted at the pitiful amount of space available in the Evo X trunk (6.9 cu ft) compared to the older Evos (11.3 cu ft), give this mod a try. Easily gives you another 2 cu ft of trunk space without giving up the spare tire or tools.
All you need is a philips screwdriver and 5 minutes.
Pull up the trunk carpet and all pressed wood panels. Unscrew the foam pieces from the floor, one screw in the left and two screws in the right. Take the tools and jack from the right side and wrap them up in an old towel so they don't bang around. Place the tool and jack bundle back where the foam on the left was. Put the carpet back down directly on top of the spare tire.
Yes the floor is slightly uneven now, but I actually prefer it that way so loose items don't go banging around in the trunk around corners.
Enjoy all the new trunk space you've gained.
I was actually looking into swapping to a single exhaust in an attempt to mount the spare tire under the car to gain even more space, but I'm not sure if it will fit between the rear diff and bumper. If anyone with a single exhaust wants to give this a try, let me know the results.
