Finally got out to Infineon Raceway on Weds. 10-7-09. Lots of EVO,s showed up, counted eight in all shapes and mods. This was my virgin run and what a rookie I am. Started out with a 14sec quarter for the first run then ran 11.7 at a 116mph and a 11.6 follow-ups after figuring out the two step launch. Really messed up after that, lowered the tire pressure at 20psi all the way around and got too much grip on the launch and booged down big time on my two-step!! It seems I need too be able to spin alittle on the launch to stay in my power range on a launch! Met some cool peeps and had a lot of fun!!! I may be hooked now!!!

I made that same mistake awhile back when I dropped the tire pressure to 20 psi and forgot to raise the 2 step :D

Glad you posted this up as i don't think your are signed up on EE.

Anyway good to hear you brought her out to see what she could do!

Sounds like you were getting the hang of things and then shot yourself in the foot w/ the tire pressures.

Here's a little advice for all out there .......when you adjust tires you want to lower in very small increments of about 2psi at a time ;) not 1 big jump and then you're having to adjust other things like the 2 step rpm casuing you to "chase-your-tail".

Were you lifting to shift on the 116mph pass?

Sounds like i need to gather up all the Evo's and have an official drag strip outting.

Anyone interested in doing it right and renting the track for a day?

Shifting into 5th did not seem to help my times, if that is what your refering to lifting. I found holding it in 4th til redline was more conducive to faster times on my 9. Gonna raise my 2 step to 6500rpm, as it seems I need to spin the wheels a while to stay in the power for those good 60ft times. Pat, when are you taking out that wicked ride of yours for a few ring-out runs?

HOLY SHIT Vince i totally forgot you have a 9......DUH!

My bad i posted on EE that it was an 8 oops.

Anyway if you're on the stock gearing in the trans then yes you are being hindered by the short 4th gear in which case i rec'd to up the rev limiter like what Chris did and spin it all the way through the traps in 4th.

I was actually referring to lifting off the gas while changing gears. NLTS

Generally on a turbo your size the sweet spot is propably going to be in the 6500-6800 rpm range depending on how you drive and tires but that's a good place to start.

And your are 100% correct in feeling that you need a little spin in these cars to get the momentum off the line......similar as to how you need enough vehicle speed before grabbing 2nd gear so that you don't bog especially if you are spinning through 1st.

I put on 75 miles last night so i plan to be out at next wed and/or sat.

Hey Jeff going out next week after a tweek and tune weds morning at Full Function, see you there bud! Pat - Sean will probably reset my redline to 8400rpm so I can hold 4th pass the traps. I'll be at the shop at 11am Weds for some quick tweeking and fine tuning. The car is way faster than my slow fatass, their aught to be a electrical shock in my seat to tell me to shift dummy!! As I found myself bouncing 1st gear into redline at least once! Anywhose any advice is definately appreciated! For the rest of you fence post sitters, this was hella fun, with no threat of the popo messing with anybody. And for $25 gate fee to go as fast as you want it don't get any better than racing a mini-van and stomping a mud hole in his ass!!

Hey guys Vicne that sounds great but not to be a bummer but forecast calls for possibly up to 3" of rain from Tues-Thur of next week :(

I've spoken to some people at Sac about renting it out and it will run in the thousands of dollars so i suspect that we may have to try and gather up more people and maybe even open it up to some domestics to make it afoordable and possibly more fun to run against some american muscle!

Not sure if we'll have time before it gets really wet and cold out so if i can't get things going i'll do my best to get something set-up for next year.

Also yes Vince upping the rev limiter to above 8000 is def needed if you wana keep it in th epower band and not have to shift.

Do you have valvetrain mods already? If not it's not 100% necessary as some people have rev'd the stock stuff out to over 8k but not frequently lol.

Nope, just a Exedy twin and the hydraulic post pill taken out. Also, added that long as stainless steel hydraulic line, might need some help in finding a better 3rd and 4th gear for my box so I won't have to worry about 5th. I hear the EVO 8 4th gears about right. I'd like to target low 11's and possibly a high 10 with a little help? Don't know if I'm being realistic with a 30R.

30r can easily run in the 10 sec range no problem.

If you're really interested Vince we can source an evo 8 3rd and 4th gear if your really keen on being geared for the 1/4 mi.

We also have 1 of our techs that rebuilt my trans that can install the gearing into your trans......but first how many miles do you have on it cuz it would be the best time to "freshen it up".

Hey Pat, My tranny has about 11,000 mi. still feels like butter when I shift. Sure would like some help with better gears! Is it necessary to change both 3rd and 4th gears, and are the new gears undercut for better engagement? Price on gear/s and install at FFTECH, you can e-mail me on cost. Thanks!

its a Stationary Rev Limiter, aka "launch control"

You start with your tuner reseting your launch control to something that your comfortable with, (mines has been reset to 6500 rpm) note your stock clutch will lunch out on you after a few of these launches so an upgrade before doing this would be smart. Let your favorite shop know want you intend to do and I'm they will have some suggestions. Now depending if you have an EVO 8 or 9 you will have to raise your redline to stay in the power in 4th gear at that is probably save you having to shift into 5th (lossing time shifting at the end of the run)( mines may reset to 8400rpm after further consultation) Now set-up on tire pressure is critical and determined by tires/traction/horsepower, I start at 22psi for the mods that I have on my car, the object is to leave enough air pressure in your tires to give you tire spin=boost in 1st gear out of the hole at 6500rpm, now this will be the tricky part. The first part on a practice run is calm the fuck down! You will line-up, wait for the christmas tree to read yellow/yellow and wait for the other lane to do the same, then the tree will lite-up big yellow, big yellow, big green means GO! This is where 99% of the 1/4 mile happens, if this is your first run, my advise is to slow everything down. What I mean is when the tree is running down large yellow large yellow you should have your clutch all the way in and the same with you gas pedal. Now this is the important part, you have to ignore your impulse to dump the clutch when you see green, (remember your driving a turbo car and you live or die on boost!!!) Your time does not start until you leave the tree so technically your not losing any time by taking your time to get your two step perfect. SOOOO, back to the launch, Clutch is in, Gas pedal is floored, rpms are at max preset (STOP LOOKING AT THE GREEN LIT/OTHER CAR LEAVING IN THE OTHER LANE THEY MEAN NOTHING TO YOUR TIME) you will pull your clutch leg up partially, enough to get the front end to lift, your car will move approx. 6 inches, continue to release the clutch all the way up, keeping her floored, done right, she will and needs to spin the tires TO BUILD BOOST OFF THE LINE!!!! Shifting into 2nd almost happens immediately, and if your driving an EVO 8 you can hold 4th gear thru the traps without shifting into 5th, if your in a 9 you may decide to up your redline so you can do the same. The 2 step is about slipping that clutch for that 1/2 second to build boost on the launch, if you did'nt boog at the launch and she burned rubber all the way thru 1st gear and way into 2nd you have figured out the infamous 2 step!!!! Goodluck, and Please Don't Practice this on Streets. Were already profiled and don't need the hassle!!

Bummer on the rain next Weds., I'm coming for a tweek an tune Weds. afternoon anyway. Back to the drags, don't get discouraged, I only got two launches right out of 8 runs so figuring out that two step can be tricky, but when you finally get it right its like sex, you know hit that sweet spot and you feel like a porn star!!! I can smell the burning clutch plates already!! Remember, I'm just a rookie at this, this was my first time on the 1/4 mi. in a car. I don't know it all but my friends know that I got no sharing my point of view. Most of the EVO's out there Weds were lightly moded, but they had a great time too, and probably learned alot about the potential of their rides.
