i am having a similar issue.

whenever i am doing low speed turns, backing up or going forward, i get a creeking, twanging sound as well. it's quite weird.

Weird indeed :) We've actually encountered this once on a customer's car and it took a little while to diagnose. We first looked at all the suspension, brake, e-brake, etc.. with no avail. It wasn't until we rolled the tire off the car that it became apparent  It ended up being something inside his wheel (between the rim and tire) that was floating around at low speeds. The sounds you describe are almost identical to what we heard.

man i hope it is but the boinging sound is definitely coming from it.i tried looking inside to see if the perch is hitting anything but to no avail there a lot of room around it.

I am having the same noise but not on my Evo. It seems like with coilovers, the spring tens to "shift" from its perches and makes a sound of some sort. Since I have coilovers on my Evo and if it come to a point when it starts doing that, I might just weld the end of the coil to the perches so there will be no movement

ah... must be the new and improved serpentine belt?!? no?

I've had that issue before on my previous car that had skunkworks coil sleeves. I didn't payed too much attention on the issue because it was already noisy to begin with. :D My Evo doesn't have this issue with HKS coilovers.

Are you running coilovers?
If the answer is yes, try putting some spray lube on your camber plates, the spherical bearings in particular. I have had issues with mild binding on my cusco plates which causes the same sounds as you describe.

a word of caution here. This is really bad for your coilovers because it can trash the inserts and the seals on the strut body.

yep running coilovers right now.will wd40 work? i got one thats on a spray can.the spherical binding would be the ball joint close to the cmaber plates right?

The sounds your car was making the last time I saw it were definatly binding noises. The section you might try lubricating is the spherical end at the top in the camber plate where the strut goes through. Try using some silicon spray rather than WD40. FWIW Warpspeed...I would not weld the coild spring to the coilover. This may cause an even more severe bind in your suspension. If the noise is really driving you nuts Energy Suspension makes coil spring isolators. I haven't heard of anyone using these on an evo yet but anything would be better than welding a spring to a perch.

hmm okay thanks for the tip guys im gonna try to go to kragen first thing in the morning to get some silicone lubricant.

that will work in a pinch, but it does not last long.

I use Triflow spray lube. Its a teflon impregnated grease, holds up well when exposed to the elements. I use the spray grease to not only lube the camber plates, but also to lube the seals on the inserts after cleaning the coilovers.

I just installed some MR Bilsteins and some Works springs on my IX today and Im getting a similar noise, if not the same thing. Happens when I turn the steering wheel lock to lock, and only makes that sound as I get near the end. Also happens mostly at slow speeds, like manuevering in a parking lot.

I've run into this before, when doing suspension on my 1G DSM, I can't remember what causes it, wether its a case of something being overtightened, or something not seated properly, or its just a matter of waiting for everything to settle and it will go away...

Maybe some of the other local suspension gurus can shed some light on this....

Thanks!

Ya well rather than start a new thread, thought I'd do a relevant search 1st.
Amazing concept I know... ;-)

That "boinging" sound comes from the top strut mount not rotating with the spring when u turn. The spring twists under the mount until reaches a point where it has enough tension to shift that's when the "boinging" noise occurs. You only hear it at low speeds cause you don't turn the wheel enough to make it shift at higher speeds. Jack up the front, grab each strut while someone turns the wheel and you should feel it binding. Take the strut mount off and re-install correctly. Grease won't make it go away, it just makes it less audible.

How do I ensure its installed correctly? I'm suspecting the culprit is the upper spring hat ( http://www.pbase.com/image/25513401.jpg #4 in this pic ), which I didnt like how it was seating on top of the spring when I had the fronts all assembled together....Also, when tightening the top nut do you need to use an airgun pretty much, or can you get away with tightening it by hand?

Thanks for the info!

Jason,

Did you align the top hat correctly when you put together the strut assembly? There's a hole on the top hat that's supposed to line up w/ a hole on the spring perch. The hole serves as a visual aid only and does not have any mechanical function.

EV0LL

No I completely forgot about that. Sounds like that might be the culprit then...
Great, I love having to re-do things over...arghh

I think I know what it is I just aligned a suby and his coil overs started doing the same thing. DID THEY CHANGE YOUR FRONT CAMBER? do you have front camber plate? what brand? the ones I did were cusco and the upper plate were hitting the set screws that lock the camber plates from sliding. I removed the screw and reinstalled them in a diff hole farther inboard on the car. and no more rubbing. on the cusco plates there are multiple holes you can use to lock in the camber
the screw hits the upper spring perch and then causes the spring to twang

Spinone has the symptom correct but the cause is what I'm talking about. now it didn't do it before the alignment change right? trust me
I think I got this one at least from my experience this is what I know to cause this problem
I want to know what the end results are with this problem just to see If I was right or not
