Was bored tonight so I took apart the ECU and snapped some photos (http://www.norcalevo.net/forums/modules.php?set_albumName=album50&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php):

Seems the board and components are sprayed/coated with some oily goop; I cleaned it off some of the ICs (chips) using isopropanol so I could get a better look at the writing.
Actually, I'd been talking with my friend who has a Galant VR4 and he mentioned how he was able to mod/flash his own ECU because its ECU's code is on a socketed EEPROM chip that you can just pull and read (using a standard EEPROM reader). Supposedly the ECUs in DSMs, Galant VR4, 3000GT and Evo 1-3 are very similar; according to my friend, Mitsubishi basically bought one ECU and programmed it a bit differently for each car.
Unfortunately it looks like the Evo8 ECU isn't nearly as simple to hack, since there's no socketed EEPROM chip or microcontroller you can pull. :-( It may still be possible to dump the ECU code through the OBD2 port but how to do so isn't widely known...
Here's what I've found on the ICs so far:
- No info on the large square "MH8206F" IC. Presumably this is the chip that holds the microcontroller and memory that is the real "brain" of the ECU.
- No info on the Mitsubishi E328 IC either. Maybe a ROM/PROM chip?
- Infineon IC is a TLE6228GP "Smart Quad Channel Lowside Switch" which is described here: http://www.infineon.com/cgi/ecrm.dll/ecrm/scripts/prod_ov.jsp?oid=13849
- E338ASK is manufactured by Allegro/Sanken, but I've not yet been able to find any further information.
