i set up my pocketlogger this morning. pretty cool but it can't
do knock.

what are the kids doing these days to log knock values?

also i bought the pda used so no manual, how do you download logs from pda to laptop?

one more thing, has anyone had luck with the log viewer on a mac?

thanks,
sean

That is a limitation of OBD2, not the pocketlogger. OBD1 on the 1G DSM's you could see knock with the pocketlogger.

You can "measure" knock by watching the timing, if it stays still or dips a bit, thats knock. If it smoothly climbs higher towards redline, then all is good.

To download the logs, just sync your palm with your computer and they will be in the "Backup" folder in your palm folder on your computer.

I used log viewer on my mac before without too many problems.

Also, did you do the self test on the palm with the pocketlogger when it was hooked up to the car? You should be able to get about 20/sec sample rate. If you don't do that, you will only get like 8/sec which sucks.

got it going, all good

yep, did that and got 19/sec.

just looked at a log from on the way to work and it looks like my timing starts out at about
19 at 2300rpm and drops down to 5 by 3650. then it starts to head back up at 4500,
pulls a couple of deg. at 5500 then up to 16 at 7400.

i'm thinking i need to lower boost and see what the timing does.

also is there a boost parameter. i have airflow but i didn't think that was it.

thanks for the help to my noob tuning ?'s

so how does the utec and others log knock?

Not through OBD2. I think they either piggyback or intercept the knock sensor signal or interpert it some other way. I haven't really looked into it too much so I'm not totally sure

What engine management? Reflash or? the timing pull at 5200ish is normal for a non-flashed ecu. 16 degrees max at 7400 is pretty low, should be around 18-20 at 7000rpms. Can you screenshot your log (data view) and post? What boost are you running?

Nope, just Manifold absolute pressure, MAP signal. Airflow is the MAF signal.

buschur/dynoflash mail in. so i'm sure it's pretty conservative.
can't post log right now cause it's on my laptop which is not allowed on the work network.
i guess they're afraid we'll steal images. lol

i'll have to look to see what boost i'm running. i know that my autometer reads about 1.5 lbs.
higher than what the dyno at srm say it's running. i think i'm aroud 19.5-20

are the MAF numbers useful to me right now?

Not really, it's easier to read the HZ value off an SAFC2, as many have, so you have a way to compare airflow.

when you log in the pocketlogger. You should only really log:

TPS
RPM
TIMING
02 Bank 1

hey bryan,
here's a log from last night. i don't know how to post image
and don't know how to get this pasted in here with the correct format.
i'm pretty much useless but here it is.
tell me what you think.

thanks,
sean

Looks good.

15 degrees up top is pretty low, but I think that might be a feature of the dynoflash, I think he limits the timing up top for some reason.

Stock evos do about 18-20 degrees timing at 7000rpms. Do you know what boost you where running when u did that pull?

no knock through OBD2?

my grand prix had OBD2 and we could read knock through the OBD2 port and an autotap. (www.autotap.com)

maybe the protocol used in the japanese cars doesn't allow for it

At least on mitsu, that is correct

Just keep in mind that the ECU gives less timing as load increases. You'll get less timing in 4th gear than you would in 3rd.

Glad you brought that up, Sean what gear did u use for that log?

that was a third gear pull. don't feel safe doing 120mph on the streets
as far as boost goes, i'll have to look. i turned it down on my mbc but forgot to look to see where it landed.
i'll let you know after lunch.

so none of the data loggers out there can grab the knock values?

even the free dataloggers for STi's can pull the knock values

There are none to grab--the Evo's ECU doesn't report knock through OBDII.

looks like i'm at 18.5-19lbs now that i've lowered it.
