View Full Version : Should i go str8 264 or 264/272?

For smog purposes and valvatrain stock purposes which one should i go with. I know of 264 i/e passing smog for 03's but for 264/272 staggered has anyone Actually passed CA smog on these and if so what were the HC/CO/Nox levels on stock valvetrain?Thanks!

word, get a stand alone if you want smooth idle. and just deal with if not, cuz it actually improves the sound of the car :]. and about stalling? if you're getting cams you get tuning, idle tuning is a part of that... you can even just turn up the idle screw a tad.

272/272 all the way.

You do not need a standalone to make 272/272s to idle properly. My setup (S-AFCII w/ SBC ID ver3) is a good example. Perfect cold start, stock-like idle, and puts down 299.7whp on gruppe-s dyno.

When did you put down 299? Last I saw from your car was 280, what did you change?

280whp was tom's..

mine has always been 297-299 :)

simple bolt on stuff

s-afc II, ebc, full tbe, exedy twin plate, 272in/ex, hks cam gears, upper ic pipe w/ mr valve.. and fuel pump w/ some misc supporting mods. still stock injectors tho..

got the 272's installed and put about 400 mi of break in time then let er rip and wow thas all i can say...cant wait to have a upgraded throttle body and port matched intake manifold put on to match em!these 272's KIK A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 :wave:

Are you going to do them yourself? Please let me know when you are going to do it... I'd like to come by to watch / help if that's cool. I gotta drop off the pedal covers and TB gasket for you at some point anyway. :) The gasket should be in on Thursday. Hopefully, I'll get my pedals reinstalled tomorrow during lunch break.

I havent decided yet if I'm gona do it. I'll let you know. Prob. wont do it till I get that smog for the salvage title.

I would just let paul do it.. I already went through the whole deal with having cam timing off..and taking a short cut for having your cams done isnt worth losing 40whp or having to have everything re done for more money...plus i would imagine your gonna need to redo the timing belts as well

264/272 passes smog just fine w/ the stock cat however. I'd expect str8 272's to do the same. maybe not 280's. If idle in too rough you'll fail HC's

are you guys running flashes with upgraded cams, or is an afcII sufficient to help tune them?

Currently im on a works reflash with a safc 2 on top of that. eventually when im done all the upgrades i need for my car ill have ecutek for the final tuning.

Has any 2003' gone to the sniffsmog time test with 272's and stock cat on?id like to know whatever the results were for the Hc, co, nox,o2's.
