Hey everyone, I was at Buttonwill all day today, getting a nice sunburn and watching Robi drive like a machine.

A WRX crashed at the track today. It took one the turns close to wall a bit too hard one too many times. It ended up catching on fire and even after emptying 4 fire extinguishers, it would not go out. Cutting the fuel line finally assisted in stopping the fire.

Even though Robi is from SoCal, he sports a NorCalEvo sticker and NOT a SoCalEvo sticker. ;)

His Buschur stage 4 is insanely fast and has with magical technical power recently added another 60whp to his already powerful car. Yeah, he was passing Corvettes just like he did at Thunderhill.

Check out the sweet Buschur intercooler. This is the one I want.

WORKS was there, checking out the track, testing out their new Zeal coilovers and their new turbo kit. They were passing up people effortlessly.

I was checking out Robi's car and noticed he was missing one Omori gauge. No idea what happened there, but he should get it fixed.

Wow I hope (and guess) the driver came out okay. Hopefully wearing a helmet will have lessened the impact of the airbag a bit.

Jan, did you drive?

I was actually supposed to drive some others car on the track, but time and other things prevented me from doing so. I love my car and don't want to take chances of a beginner like myself hurting it. But other cars - it's not my bill. ;)

More pics.

Want to buy a car for the track?

They're cheap too!

Robi's ass. Er, make that the backside of his car. A very common view for people.

Hmmm.. a Dynoflash featuring 10 minute boost delay. Just don't hold max boost for more than 10 minutes. I think I want to make a rip off of the Dynoflash with a tag line of "ours goes to 11". Yeah yeah.. old reference that shows my age. Not all jokes are funny, just like how all ECU reflashes are not the same.

Damn talk about advertising...robi, you always make it a point to say that you are a retail customer, but HOLY CRAP!! You really should be getting paid. My Dad was hazing me for having my Santa Monica Mitsubishi license plate holder on the car...DAMN!

The wife found a post from the guy who crashed his WRX @ Buttonwillow over on i-club.

Here is what he said:

"Hi Guys,

That was my car you guys are seeing in the pics. I came out of the hospital with a fractured knee and bruised pelvis and chest. Story goes as at the end of the front straight, going counterclockwise, theres a right turn which I took going in too fast and touched dirt with the left rear wheel which resulted in over-rotating the car and I slid into the wall. The rear diff certainly was working as the rear right tire gripped the pavment while the rear left was slipping. I was concious the entire time as the airbags ripped my visor off of my helmet on impact. Going around 70mph to 0 in one second into a wall leaves alot energy to be absorbed by me. This was third time visiting Buttonwillow and I was just getting too confident in trying to best my previous laps. The car has been towed to a collision center so my insurance can estimate the value and consider it totaled. This is definitely a reality check on what can happen at the track, so be careful out there guys. The last thing anyone wants to see is all their time, money and work they put into their car go away in an instant. My return to any track won't be for awhile as I've scared myself and loved ones enough to put away the heel toe and move to safe automatic, hopefully a new Prius considering the insane gas prices now. Take care guys, and be careful on the Subaru day later on this month.

Thats a similar place an (MKIV) Supra at one of our events crashed.. he got into the wall just enough for the stacked tires to do the brunt of the damage. Going counter-clockwise, he was going around 'Sunrise' (http://www.buttonwillowraceway.com/images/brp_track.gif), confidently rolled onto the throttle coming out of the turn, oversteered, tried to correct things, and went to the inside wall.
Which turn on the map was it this WRX did? Sunrise, or Sunset..? I didn't think there was as much a risk for Sunset..

Its too bad hes letting this mishap at the track disuade him with performance driving. Sure, maybe he should cool it from the track for awhile (a month?), but theres always autocross where the risk of hitting something/rolling over while out of control is pathetic, and doing something right becomes apparent very abruptly.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. That's almost like saying "I'll never drink again" after getting sick 'cause you had one too many. What happens? Of course you go out the next weekend, and if your'e in Mexico it's the next day, and do it all over again!!! I've been fortunate enough that all my "incidents" at the racetrack have happened when I wasn't the car owner and didn't have to pay for repairs and what not, but I was also getting paid to do it, so I guess there's a difference. God forbid anything would happen while driving my own car, especially my driver! No worries, he'll dust himself off and be back out there again. True addicts can't stay away for too long!

And he is now a proud SoCalEvo.net member. He actaully went back to buttonwillow while were were at thunderhill. He said it was like standing up to your worst fear.

ok...I guess I'm never going to let you take out my car then!

btw: I don't think you need a new intercooler for your car if your not planning on tracking it in the near future. The Evo IC is great, and unless you are doing some HARD driving on your car, it's adequate.

do you trailer your evo to the tracks?

robi

No. I drive it everywhere I have a work truck but I drive my Evo anychance I get...

Your car is too pink for me to drive on the track! And the IC is a future improvement, just like lots of other things. Besides, I would need to get the new IC piping and smaller battery kit.

02 WRX 48kmi *RIP*"Hindsight is 20-20, but the best option for him probably would have been to just let his car run off the track once you get a wheel off.

That sucks though, the WRX I've seen crash was the turn into the front straight. The WRX has a tendency to understeer in some situations; coming out of that turn sometimes drivers will crank the wheel harder, and then when it finally grips the car grabs all the way to the right and heads towards the wall.
