Hey guys,

To make things more fun... I have decided we should have a little contest.

Since most Norcal Evo owners are running stock turbo on their cars. The car that makes the most power with a stock turbo and any bolt ons shall receieve a free dyno. I know it might not be fair since the 05 has a bigger hotside but this is more geared towards how well the car has been pieced together with all the diff mods. The gain on a bigger hotside is very min. :lol:

Rule: 91 octane only!! FYI, we can smell race gas. :lol:

sounds good! dumb question about the AFR -- do you guys use one that goes in the stock midpipe location that feeds the narrowband signal to the ECU?

I think they stick their own Wideband O2 into your tail pipe

Not sure, 270 or so is probably 300 or so on a dynojet.

i really want those numbers higher.. i'd get the alky kit.. but honestly i'm a bit leary about having to run something that i might not be able to get my hands on at any particular time. any idea what mods i can add for a couple hundred bucks to help me out... i don't want to put an mbc because my flash holds boost pretty well.. i was looking at lower ic piping.. but that's kind of sort of minimal gains (10 whp).. comments.. i'd be willing to do an SAFCII but frankly I have no idea how to "tune" it.. I need to bug Evan some more about that!

A few ? to confirm:

1) Is it set on the 11/19 Sat.? I assumed it is but there is no definite reply on that.

2) Is it still going if it rains? I have never dynoed b4, so I don't know if wet cars will damage the dyno or not.

3) Since we got 17 people or more as it gets closer to the date, how is it handled who goes first b4? First come first served or assigning time slots? The reason I ask is I can only stay for 2-3 hours and have to leave.

Okay guys...I was donw in LA for the weekend and this thread is blowing up while I am not here. I thought no one wanted to dyno and now we got 18 or more. Anyway, the CAP is 20 since it should be a fun day for everyone including the dyno operators.

This was the first time putting the car on a dyno since I installed the ECU+ three days ago. Still some fine tuning to do but I'm happy so far with only 3 hours of tuning it over the last 3 days and without a wideband yet. I was pretty close once it got on the dyno.

Also the ECU + dyno functionality is pretty damn close. I logged the dyno runs and the ECU + dyno torque matched the mustang dyno and the HP was only 5hp off the mustang dyno.

Max Power: 229.6 @ 6000RPM
Max Torque: 252.0 @ 3750RPM

today's tune was done on all 91.

previously i made 300 whp on 20psi peak w/ taper and aggressive timing, but after reviewing the datalogs over the course of a few weeks, the aem showed knock activity between 6500 to 7400, and i decided to tone down the tune.

it needed about 5 degrees of timing taken out in that range to remove the noise. the result is the 281 wtq and 281 whp, with power falling significantly at 6500.

i can't determine if what im getting is actual knock or just engine noise, the loss in hp tells me that i am very far from MBT (maximum brake torque) with my timing, with an overall loss of 20 whp.

ideally if i had some new plugs i could have read them after the pull to get a better idea of what was going on, but i didnt know gruppes had some plugs in stock, and by time tom me my session was long over as i was the first car on.

making numbers on the gruppe-s dyno is hard :evil:

I was planning on putting in the new fuel pump (sitting on the shelf) when the gas gets down to about 1/4 of a tank. It has 1/2 tank now and I only drive it during the weekends so I guess use the gas up quicker after seeing the A/F ratio. lol

Yes, it was. :D I added some fuel with the S-AFC while we were out for lunch today. 11.1 to 10.8 from what I saw but I'll need to log some runs and see what happens.

wow, those are some LOW timing numbers!

Saturday I did 270whp/269wtq and my timing peaked at 21 at 7400 rpms.

Overall my timing is much higher than yours and other than a couple spikes of knock to 1.8v , most of the pull wasn't much over 1.0v. I wonder if my 720cc injectors are helping me more than I think since it seems I can run more timing than you.

11.4 peak AFR so I do want to tune that down a little bit to about 11.2 / 11.1

I'm not going to do much untill I get the cams in. My goal is 300whp safely on pump gas too.

i don't think that the engine is really running that little timing. what i think is happening is that the AEM's timing numbers are just plain wrong and refer to some non-sense number.

i do not believe they can be compared timing wise to the numbers that come out of the pocket logger.

some of my other friends who tune aem on evo's say the same thing. and their timing numbers on the aem are just as low as mine.

i remember a post from buschur saying tht his timing gots from about 2 degrees at peak torque to 9 degrees at redline. i also remember a post about dynoflash reporting the same thing that the timing in the aem is off compared to stock.

i don't think that the engine is really running that little timing. what i think is happening is that the AEM's timing numbers are just plain wrong and refer to some non-sense number.

i do not believe they can be compared timing wise to the numbers that come out of the pocket logger.

I'm not getting those from the pocketlogger, I am getting them from the ECU +

I don't understand why AEM is giving you different numbers? What would be the reason for that? So you are saying before that when you where at 18 degrees it was actually much more? huh?

yes basically thats what im saying.

there is a parameter inside the AEM called inductive pick up delay compensation which is supposed to correct for high rpm timing inaccuracy.

this is done by setting the timing table to 5 degrees across the board, and using a non adjustable timing light. the engine is revved to about 5000 rpm, and the light is supposed to flash on the 5 degree mark on the timing plastic cover. if it is not on the mark, changing this number is supposed to correct it.

when i did this on my car, the light was not on the mark, but changing the inductive pickup delay did not change anything. so i left it as is.

think about it this way lets say if my car has the same exact mods as yours except i run aem and you run ecu+. we run the same a/f and same boost, same knock voltage. we produce the same hp curves and same tq curves.

except, on my aem it indicates a much lower timing than your ecu+.

Now how is this possible if we are running the same gas, same everything, except the efi?

When it comes to tuning parameter (no mechanicals) wise, there are really only 3 things the tuner has control of. A/F, timing, and boost. these set in a particular combination will produce X amount of hp.

going back to my example, the only logical explanation is that the numbers inside the AEM do not reflect what is happening at the spark plug.

Normally this is not a problem, as someone tuning AEM would just tune around this, basically disregard what the timing numbers are relative to what they should be on a stock ECU, and just tune for maximum brake torque for that fuel. lowering it from that point to maybe 5 to 10 whp for pump gas as a margin of safety.

But for my purposes, this is unacceptable, as my original goal for purchasing aem was to use it as a quick and simple way to develop timing curves for a reflash.

Unlike what you may read on the internet this is a true and unbias review of the AEM product. While it gets the job done, it really isn't the most precise or reliable piece of electronics.

Going to do some tuning after I put on the IC pipes (still waiting for them) and IC (sitting in garage).

Supposedly, the SMC alky kit should be shipping sometime this week. I haven't decided on which to use yet, methanol or ethanol. Wifey would castrate me if I bought a 55g drum of methanol. We used to run ethanol in our Maximas (hers was Stillen supercharged and mine was turboed) so she's okay with small containers.

I would have liked to make it up but I had to work, Im running a super safe 11.1 right now and the car still feels very strong. I think 290whp is a very relisitic goal for me on that dyno with a little more aggressive tuning. I did a little run with my freind in a 270whp ecutek Sti this weekend ( tuned at gruppe-s ) and was able just pull away from them pretty bad on both runs.. on the second I started 3 cars lengths back and pulled anywhere from 4-6 car lengths in front of them although It was hard to tell just when they let off... they were rather amazed by the top end on the evo and how my car just kept pulling while the sti ran out of steam :wink: looks like you car is running nicely...im stiking with my current setup till I can pick up an evo IX 20g




one of the things i don't like about AEM is that i don't think their timing numbers reflect what is really happening in the engine. as i see guys running way more indicated timing on their afc + pocketloggers. i have done all the syncs and ignition comp delays as recommended by aem, and i am convinced that it just does not work the way its supposed to.

wow, those are some LOW timing numbers!

Saturday I did 270whp/269wtq and my timing peaked at 21 at 7400 rpms.

Overall my timing is much higher than yours and other than a couple spikes of knock to 1.8v , most of the pull wasn't much over 1.0v. I wonder if my 720cc injectors are helping me more than I think since it seems I can run more timing than you.

11.4 peak AFR so I do want to tune that down a little bit to about 11.2 / 11.1

I'm not going to do much untill I get the cams in. My goal is 300whp safely on pump gas too.

You can see I still have some tuning to do to the timing curve to make it smoother but once again I am going to wait till I get the cams in and then spend a couple hours on the dyno getting everything good.

I am still pretty damn happy on the numbers I am doing with only 3 power mods and stock turbo and cams. I can't wait till I get some cams in!

I've strapped down my Maxima at ATP and ran the dyno with Su's supervision. :D

Oh... I'll probably take that free dyno within a couple weeks. I need to do a boost leak test, some fine tuning of the AFR, and tweaking of the SMC controller first.
