Hey all,

so I recently picked up a new set of Work Emotions in 18x8.5" +30, and I'm debating between two sizes to get:

245/40/18 and 255/35/18...

does anyone know if the 255/35/18 will have any problems with rubbing on a 18x8.5" +30 rim?

:) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

with a +30 wheel and 255 wide I am sure it will rub in the back. My 17x9 +35 with 255's come VERY close in the rear.

actually he would gain clearance on your setup brian.

your 9" wide wheel has a 35mm offset
his 8.5" wheel gains him ~12.5mm(~24.7mm/inch) in wheel width alone which he gives back
5mm for the difference in offsets so he should still see about 7mm more clearance or about 1/3-1/4 inch.

that being said, tread widths are all over the place even though they have the same size number on the side of the tire.

oops!

after writting all this i realized i'm somewhat wrong with this.
the narower wheel won't gain you much clearance as the wheel width itself
since it won't pull the tread width down so theoretically, you're just moving
the tire out an extra 5mm.

i'll shut up now

Actually, the conversion factor is 25.4mm/inch.

Basically, you just add offset plus half your tire width to get the distance from the hub to the inner most part of the tire.

So +30 offset w/ a 255 tire is 30+.5(255) = 157.5 mm

35 + .5(255) = 162.5mm

Larger # means less clearance.

i know. i was still factoring in the wheel width difference as well. thinking that
you would still gain from that as well. and you do if your just looking at the rim
face but the tread width just won't be influenced that much by the narower wheel.
and the mm->inch was just off the top of the head. i always use 25mm/inch
but i knew it wasn't spot on. i was just too lazy to look it up

heh.. you're right. Knowing the inner most part of the wheel is also beneficial since that actually comes closer to the rear trailing arm. So you just add half the wheel width to the offset to figure out how much it goes in.

Thanks for all the responses :)

Most likely, I'm going to end up going w/ the 245/40s anyway (due to the large price increase for 255/35s...). Maybe later down the road, I'll end up trying the 255s :)

i would think 255's are a bit wide for a 8.5 rim

They fit fine. They also fit on the stock 17x8 but that is really pushing it.

I ended up getting 245/40 T1-Rs anyway...the prices of the 255s are mainly what kept me away. 255s woulda been so nice though!

Your car looks better with the 245/40/18's anyway. Looks perfect with your RSR downsprings.

Got a picture you can show us? I don't have one yet with your new rims.
