I was contemplating on which size downpipe to get. From what ive read so far a 2.75" downpipe will clear everything nicely on my IX with no spacers or anything like that. And a 3" will work but i will have to use the spacers and it will be awfully close to the oil pan.
So to my main question: "Who here is actually running a 2.75" downpipe and if you do, do you regret not going with a 3" instead?

I ran a 70mm on my black 03 and now a 76 on the silver one. Cant realy say theres much difference. Maybe better torque on the 70mm.

I am running the 70 mm Works downpipe on my 05 MR. No rubbing or bumping. I don't regret not going with a 76 mm because I don't think I'll ever be making enough power to tell the difference.

If you see the new Sportcompact Car mag, they have an 05 MR with a 70 mm downpipe from RRE. RRE has been tuning Mitsu's for years and they really know these cars.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference until you really are building a no longer street legal monster (550 whp +). Then the 70 mm pipe might be holding you back.

Plus, the 70 mm pipe matches flow better with the stcok O2 housing.

i have Evo Grim's 70 MM DP now and it feels great, no need to hit up a larger DP unless you have a GT30+ turbo

I'm running the Tanabe 2.75" as well on my 05. No clearance issues! 8)

I run a 2.75" Espelier downpipe and I doubt I would pick up any power going to a 3" with my setup.

Thanks guys. Thats what i really wanted to know. So basically until i run pretty much 550+ HP or a Gt35R, the 2.75" should be more than enough right.

Ok another question. For you guys that used the 2.75" downpipe. Did you go with 3" from there on? For example a 3" test pipe.

Also i was looking on Lancershop and noticed that they sell a Ultimate Racing 3" test pipe and it says "Guaranteed not to set off a CEL". There is also a Perrin Test Pipe that comes with an O2 simulator which in turn does not set off a CEL. MY question is why does the UR test pipe not set off a CEL without the use of a simulator.

Sorry for the long question guys.

Nope. Fits like a glove!

The test pipes that dont put out cels have a fix that doesn't put the 02 sensor in the path of the exhaust, but its an easy fix to buy 2 antifoul kits from local parts store.

Yeah, what he said :)

We've found the 70mm piping is fine for those who aren't planning on changing the stock turbo and/or O2 housing. Our 76mm pipe is designed in conjunction with the WORKS O2 housing and both offer OEM fitment and reliability. If you go with a larger turbo, you may want to get the 76mm to start with--besides the larger piping is actually less expensive. Going with a much larger turbo (ATP, Garrett, etc...) usually involves a custom DP to mate with the new component.

So your downpipe has no clearance issues at all with an 05+ ACD equipped Evo or an MR?

My good friend has the Works DP on his 05 MR, fits perfectly.

I have the Tanabe DP on my car and it works great. The stock turbo won't push enough exhaust gas for a 76mm. If you were going for a bigger turbo like a GT30...99% of the kits on the market will come with its own 3"dp.

Thanks,
Tom

Here's the quote from RRE. "Espelier Stainless Steel 2.75" down pipe. OMG! It's only 2.75" diameter! ¡Que horríble! Yeah, you will be limited to about 600 hp with "only" a 2.75" down pipe."

Cool, so i pretty much narrowed it down to either the Tanabe from Lancershop for $240 or the Espelier from RRE for $210. If there are no quality differences between the two, Iam proably going to go with the one from RRE.

Get the tanabe. The Espelier downpipe has a paper thin flange at the cat.

Alright heres hopefully my last downpipe question. Hopefully. I can get either the Tanabe or the DC sports cat delete for the same price. But the DC will save money by not having to buy a test pipe. Are there any downsides really of running a straight cat delete compared to a downpipe and test pipe setup? In your guys opinion which way would you go: DC cat delete or Tanabe+Test pipe? for a 9 MR.

tanabe+test pipe so just in case you get into trouble you can pop back your stock cat

A downpipe with cat delete all-in-one is just such an obvious thing if people look at it.

I would go 2-piece.

The cheap-ass in me wants the cat delete but then i can also see the hassle of having to change the whole downpipe if i need to put the stock cat back on. So it looks like iam going to go with the Tanabe+ UR Test pipe(Since test pipes are just a piece of metal right)+ A Greddy Ti catback(if my hookup comes through with it). Does that sound like a decent setup?

It works for most of us. I have the Tanabe DP, feeding into a 3" UR HFC hooked up to a 3" RSR ExMag. If you end up changing your mind and going with the DC Sports piece shoot me a PM. I know a guy who works for them.
