View Full Version : Messing with timing...

Today I did some tuning changes to my timing map and some very small changes to my fueling map to compensate.

I centered my efforts today around 3000-5000 rpm

Look at the difference adding a little bit of timing in that area does! At 4300rpm, I gained 19wtq and 16whp. I was really impressed with the curve gain from 3500 to 5200rpm.

All of this was with not much added knock voltage so still a safe tune.

Next time I will be tweaking 5200rpm on since I am still running some lower timing there.

Here is the dyno chart and the 2 maps before and after so you can see the changes I did.

Yeah, that's what I found with my ECU+ tuning, it can be very touchy at those mid rpms. I can -1 timing and there is no knock at all (low voltage), add one back, knock comes right out. What I did was stay with -1 timing and back a little more fuel out (don't know 100% it is a right move but knock did not show, A/F went leaner and EGT did not increase)

I am surprised that u got +7 timing at idle. Yes, I know u've got 720s on. I thought u just need to add fuel at idle and + alittle timing but u've got +7 and +6/1k.

So many things to tune, that's why my 720s still sitting in the garage, till I know more. However, my EBC is going on this weekend and the 720s might be needed sooner.

What are the chances I can use your maps if I put in the FP and injectors this weekend? Kaboom?

Is your overall estimated HP down from last fall?

The torque looks awesome.

This is from the ECU+ "road" dyno plot, his 303 whp is on Gruppe-S's Mustang dyno. Though I thought the two matched more closely than that...

ECU+ logs done on the gruppe-s dyno are about -10whp and almost spot on with torque compared to the actual output of the dyno.

On the street I have seen more variance in whp. Probably showing the difference between loading on the dyno and on the street and also the temp changes.

The only thing I really look at is the changes from tweaks on the same stretch of road at the same time of day.

I have found that adding timing at idle increases vacumn which helps smooth out the lope of cams.

I looked it up my self. It looks like your estimested torque is way up from your dyno run comparision. How's it drive?

Here is a log screenshot and the actual log under that, knock voltage is getting a little noisy but still under 1.8v. I will try to tune some of the noise out with fuel next session. :)

I'll also be logging the next couple days doing a bunch of different types of driving to see how these current settings look. If they don't look so hot , I will revert or bring them down a bit.

alrighty, did some changes to the tune today. Also swapped the stock OEM drop-in filter with a K&N drop-in filter.

I had to take out 1 degree of timing from 4000 rpm to 5500 rpm to smooth out the knock voltage a bit. I also put back in some fuel from 2750 to 6000 rpm.

This seemed to smooth everything out pretty well. These changes made me gain a bit in the midrange over yesterdays tuning and also a bit up top.

Then I pulled over and swapped out the filters. Did three runs with the K&N in and tweaked it a tad (needed more fuel). There is still some tuning to do with the new filter in, it seems to want to knock a little at 5000 rpm.

Notice on the curves below that I gained up top with the K&N filter but lost a bit of torque and HP in the mid and lows. I will have to tune and see if I can get those areas back. The knock at 5k might have a bit to do with it as as well.

A really interesting comparison chart showing almost no change at all in MAF input with the K&N filter:

so I brought the timing down a bit for now. I didn't like the knock voltage noise I was getting and I don't have time right now to log a bunch and tweak.

better safe than sorry. I will try to do these settings with some 100 octane in the future.
