+1 downshifting. Kinda just picked up the habbit, never really started doing it on purpose.

do you guys find it faster to double clutch, or just dump it into gear?

I'm hella hard on my clutch as it is. I do it mainly to try to help it out. ;)

I do it sometimes when downshifting (but never at the track), and always when shifting into a gear where I've busted the synchro--5th gear in my Evo, 3rd gear in my Miata.

I guess I'm not too gentle on transmissions.

Are you asking about double-clutch heel/toe downshifts Wilson? I'm currently training myself to double clutch on my EG, but it feels pretty foreign still.

wilson1
06-05-2006, 08:25 PM
yeah, do you do it both , on upshift and downshift?

MarkSAE
06-05-2006, 08:43 PM
I think double clutching is more meant for downshifting. It can probably be done for upshifting, but it'll slow you down as that'll mean more time off the gas.

I never double clutch, since I think my synchros are still functional. I just blip the throttle on downshifts, and it's usually totally smooth. Only shifting into 2nd sucks, but I have found that if I start shifting before I press the clutch, it clicks into 2nd a lot better.

I don't "double clutch", but I heel-toe and rev match 95% of the time.

no double clutching. Just rev-match and let the syncros do the work, thats what they are for

isn't it crazy how every tranny has its own individuality? It's things like that that scare me to let someone drive my car, like my Paseo after i swapped it, you had to put reverse in real slowly and lightly.

what method is that best way to learn heel/toe without slamming on the brakes.
As for me, I'm a little afraid to do so, in my 1st manual car. By the way, that is the benifits of heel/toe when downshifting.

Practice in an empty parking lot? I practiced on my EG. Since the car has no power, it was no biggie if I gassed it too much. ;)

heel toe/ rev matching as they would say help ease the transmission stress by down shifting.... thus helping your transmission last longer....

the best way to learn rev matching is by practicing while the car is off just get use to the idea... foot placement... are you like takumi that like to have his foot sideways.... or are you more like a guy with a huge foot which would just like to roll one side of the pedal to the other... once you get use to the idea... just do it at low rpms... like try to rev match maybe 2500 to 3000 rpm....you dont need to go gung ho on it and try to rev match at 7000rpm... once your familiar with it bleeping! and rev matching usually 1000 rpm higher than where you shifted from.... then you can try to go faster and higher rpm.... all in all practice makes perfect..... how do you know you did it right?.... youll know... theres no jerking... the car doesnt pull you back just a really smooth shift..... and your engine purrrrrss...

oh and for the question i do rev match everyday..... peace....

damn dude, you`re all over the net, LOL j/p

I only do heel and toe when I go up canyons on a spirited driving!! At the track only when down shifting from high speeds. 8)

whats the diff between rev match and double clutch

whtrice

Double clutching came about back when syncros were not available in transmissions yet. It required you to activate the pedal twice before you get moving in any given gear. Push pedal in and take out of gear your in, then push pedal in again to shift into gear. Rev matching is used when downshifting and requires a blip of the throttle to bump RPM's before you engage the lower gear. Makes for a smoother entry into the lower gear with out putting all the load on the drive train.

I see no point in double clutching.

I just slam the gears into place.

+1 But with the cold weather I am doing a full double clutch when the car is first driven in the morning until the tranny warms up to normal operating temps.

vtluu

It's kinda like a backwards burnout, if you're lucky and your wheels simply break traction. (If you're not lucky... well that's where the "money" in "moneyshift" comes in.)

I only double clutch when my car is warming up, the first to second gear transition can be a bit hard to shift when cold so I just double clutch there. It doesnt seem to have this problem in any other gear and I dont have to double clutch when it is warmed up. But I rev match almost every downshift and heel toe when braking is needed with a downshift.

I don't think you need to double clutch anymore since most cars on the road have syncros in the transmissions. You only need to double clutch if you're driving one of those big rigs. Otherwise I just blip the throttle when downshifting. I still find it funny when people just downshift and let the clutch drag a little before engaging.

I don't even need the clutch, I just pull it out of gear and i slam it into the next one and I hear a bit of grinding but, #$@#$ it!

Jm. I drive like a old lady.

Do the synchros function when you are shifting with the engine off? I installed a short-shifter a few weeks ago and thought I had really screwed up when I realized how hard it was to go from 1st to 2nd - but I was testing with my engine off.

i do it all the time, its better for the transmission and clutch to disengage the gear completely before downshifting. it looks badass too when you got people in the car :)
