View Full Version : Dataloggers: which? UPDATED!

I want to get a bunch of folks together to get a good price on dataloggers.

Here are the options:
Race Technology DL1. List price $950 , display $675. $850 + $600 for display
The standard for road racing dataloggers. More expensive than the competition, but the most popular- which means you can trade and compare files with many other DL1 owners. http://www.race-technology.com/content.php?pcat=10&cat=1526

RacePak G2X datalogger. List price $943 with dash display included. $785 each for 10!!!
This kit has a gps almost as fast as the DL1, and its display is more complete. But it's not the most common hardware.

Both packages have software download for free, so you can try them out to see which has better features.

i found the g2x for 749 at one point and now i can't find where the site was. i'm pissed because that is about 100-150 cheaper than i can find it now.
there are definitely more dl1's out there and it's a quality unit but more and more people are going to the g2x as well. i think it's nice to have a dash included with lap times,
shift lights and warning lights. also all the local trackmaps are online and downloadable.

if you end up going the g2x route count me in for one.

No it's not. Look again. It's $965. The other one is $579 with no display.

The DL1 is priced at $965 (I seem to recall it was cheaper back when I bought it), and includes nothing other than the wiring connectors, 12V outlet power connector, GPS antenna and carrying case (or at least that's what mine came with). I know a local guy who's a dealer for Race Technology, I bought my DASH1 unit from him, he might be willing to discount a group buy.

I think it's fair to say the G2X is better value for the money, but I have no regrets about getting the DL1. Back when I was shopping for dataloggers (~2 years ago) it was pretty much the only game in town for under $1k.

so 950 + 675?

For Race Technology DL1. List price $950 , display $675.
Close, here are the current DL1 numbers:

...I can go to $850 on the DL1 alone if you buy 10.
For a DL1 and Dash2 together I can go to $1675. For DL1 and Dash1 $1460.
Any sensors would be 15% off.

It's clearer like this:
DeviceList Price.......Our Price
DL1$ 965$ 850
DL1+Dash1$ 1640$ 1460
DL1+Dash2$ 1930$ 1675
G2X w/dash$ 944$ 784

I'm talking to both companies. In fact, this isn't even the group buy yet, I just want to find out who wants which, so we have a better chance of getting enough people together.

I have to say, I'm really biased toward the G2X, you get so much more for less money. The parts aren't as pretty, but they're also one hell of a lot less expensive. It's about half the price of the DL1 if you get the display for the DL1.

I think the G2X looks nicer. And they have more info on their website. You can datalog non-closed courses (autox). woot!

In the latest issue of SportsCar, they were showing a box that the SCCA is using for preliminary datalogging / benchmarking of cars. Is anyone here going to do the same thing? It looks like a really good idea -- basically a gel cel in an aluminum enclosure with the DL1 + maybe the antenna. There's a ring attached to the bottom / side of the box that allows it to get clamped to a rollcage. I will definitely do something like this if I ever venture into this sort of datalogging.

DL1 takes 12V and comes with a standard power adapter, so I don't see the point of powering it separately. It's really easy to mount temporarily in a car.

If you have a dedicated racecar (you), then it makes sense. But I don't really want to have yet another thing to power off of my car. :)

What else do you power off of your car on track? Just curious.
Thanks,

I usually run a chasecam, MPEG4 recorder, AC inverter. Camcorder doesn't count since that's off of a battery. Valentine 1 is hardwired. I run all non-critical components off of the same circuit so that a short won't take out any important stuff (airbags)... so I'm trying to keep the load to a minimum, especially since eventually I'll be testing the meth controller on the same circuit. Oh yeah, and all of my gauges and wideband are on that 12V circuit as well.

Thanks for the info Matz, only thing i have is a hardwired V1 (which is usually remove for track anyways) so cigarette power will probably suffice for me.

Without a roll bar or cage, anyone have suggestions for mounting? So far ideas include zip tying it to the back of the seat (through harness holes) or to passenger seat rail. Other suggestions welcome. Would prefer not drilling since mine will have to go between many cars.

Thanks,

lesson here, don't buy through the manufacturer at racepak.com :(

jegs.com $842.98

Do you leave your rear seat in? If not, you could zip tie it to the cross brace between the rear seat and the trunk. I also think there's a pipe behind the glovebox that you can zip tie to, but I haven't looked back there in a while... However, I'd say that the passenger seat's harness holes is the best option, as long as it'll pass a safety inspection. I don't know how anal they are about that kind of stuff.

I'd be in forÂ* a G2X group buy (that's how I found this site)...

I was looking in another thread that Smack found...Â* $859 here:Â* http://moto-delta.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=769

The only ones I have found for less than that were just the unit and didn't include the display and schiznit with it.Â* I almost bought one for $725 somewhere but it didn't have all the accessories with it.Â* I want that cool-ass display.Â* :D Are you guys planning on the whole kit 'cause I don't want to have to buy the other stuff from 18 different websites.?

My brother has the DL-1 and it's nice, but with the display he paid over $1k, no way man....

I ended up buying one from MotoDelta.Â* Best price I found in a retailer.Â* I asked them if they'd do a group buy and they said yes, but I wanted it for an even coming up in 2 weeks so I didn't want to wait.Â* I got my system in 3 days and am looking forward to trying it out this weekend!

Sweet deal too http://moto-delta.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=769 , I told the guy there were a bunch of people interested on this forum and he gave me another $15 off, does that make me a whore?Â* :D

Did you ever look at the economical entry-level datalogger that I posted about? http://www.maxqdata.com. It's really awesome.

That said, I'm starting yet another project that will probably never get completed, but I am going to try to do a homebrew data acq box because the other options I want that are on the V500 and DL-1 will cost me almost as much as my car. I just got a sweet FPGA dev kit and I want to see what it's capable of doing.

Yeah, did read up a lot on your threads and on their site. It is very tempting, but don't have a compatible phone/pocket pc so would have to buy that. With the cost of both I'd be getting in the ballpark of the G2X, and I like the dedicated dash display of both that and the MXL.

As for your other project...no new projects until you do the second clock mod!
