It really is funny as hell how the whole right side of the dyno graph is.....so blank....

4200 is the rev limiter? Does it have 16 gears?

^^^ and instant torque? looks like an electric motor but not with that limit.

earlyapex1

electric motor would have a more linear trq curve wouldn't it?

redvolution

For an ideal electric motor using permanent magnets, torque peaks at 0 rpm and then linearly drops as revs increase.

I just don't understand how you could drive that car in any sort of performance setting with a redline that low and only 5 or 6 gears

Looks like the dyno chart from my old truck. She'd do 75 in 5th.

This diesel seems to be doing all right:

This year it only won some little race called the 24 Hours of Le Mans. :P

Endurance racing isn't about flat-out speed. Reliabity, consistency, and the ability to run longer stints make all the difference.

Tam, I have a feeling that revs just a bit higher. ;)

Only if you literally mean "just a bit"; from http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/experience/motorsport/Audi_R10_TDI/v12_tdi_engine.html :

"The usable power band lies between 3000 and 5000 revs per minute."

It's all about the crazy low final drive ratio. From ~1600rpm to 4000rpm that bimmer makes >300ft-lbs.

That thing must have the longest gearing known to man and turbos the size of baby chipmunks. Does it go 80mph in 1st? I know if I shifted at 4k I would be in 4th gear before I even left the pits at thunderhill.

it only has a 5-speed in it as well.

The BMW's have 6sp's in them, and those actual cars are not sold as is in Europe. They only come in this form with Auto's in. BMW did some swapage for the C&D/MPME team.
