Downshifting + Braking will slow you down quicker. I usually just shift to neutral and apply brakes. Replacing the brakes is way cheaper than replacing the clutch.

Brake then downshift if needed, neutral if coming to a complete stop. Don't engine brake, that's what brakes are for. You shouldn't ever use your engine to slow down, that is just added wear.

Just wondering how everyone else treats their Evo. I've heard the pro's and cons of both, when I first got my Evo (first manual car) I would just put in neutral and apply the brakes. Now I'm downshifting more I seem to be saving more gas.
i sometimes rev match...or just throw it into neutral....depending on my surroundings

I like to downshift more in case the light turns green before I get there.
Hi, my name is Charlie.

yah if I know I'm coming to a stop I put it in neutral when I get down to 15-20 mph. Otherwise I will just down shift into the appropriate gear after a minor slow down.

the only real point to downshifting is to select a proper gear for when you start moving again. the problem with not downshifting gear by gear is that it makes it easy to loose track of what gear you need to be in and then when you release the clutch its 10x worse then if you did use the engine as the brakes. So in short, keep downshifting but if your revs are high (say 4500+) use the bake to slow you. If your just cruising and need to slow down a tad a simple downshift is fine without the brakes.

Problem with putting it in neutral is that if you have to get going again quickly you have that added time of putting it in gear again. Think emergancy situation.
