So worried about passing smog next year, I decided to take a trip to a friend's smog shop. Last time I failed his pre-test with a Helix High Flow Cat. The idle readings on HCs were off the charts and officially made my car a "Gross Polluter".

I then put on my stock catalytic convertor and it cleaned up HCs and COs pretty good.

Here's a comparison HFC vs STOCK CAT:

At idle
HFC HCs 2434 (100 MAX)
CO 0.95 (1.00 MAX)
STOCK HCs 14
CO 0.01

At 2500rpms
HFC HCs 138 (130 MAX)
CO 0.76 (1.00 MAX)
STOCK HCs 2
CO 0.72

Keep in mind I have 280 intake/280 exhaust cams & Evo Green...(other mods see in sig.)

Bottom line: You CAN pass smog with cams and upgraded turbo (green, at least) Now the next step is trying to get my CELs in check.
Any suggestions on how to fix the PO300 code 100% effectively? Maybe a full COP ignition system?

This is great info, I think we are going to take one of the larger turbo cars with 91 and test them out as well. I didn't know the Helix HFC was that bad... hahaha.

If they are friends there's really no way to get busted. Pretty much the only way to get busted is a sting.

Another thing the op might wanna consider is talking with his tuner about emissions. Might be worth the price of a retune to not only see how your car is doing since your last tune but also get the idle a little cleaner as well.

If anyone has a friend that's a smog guy and are going to be getting a e85 tune, I'm very interested to see a direct comparison of 91 to e85...

Also I would think that a turbo would have little to no effect on emissions unless a load was placed on the car. Paticularly something stock based and as small as the green.

I have a friend that's got a test only station in San Leandro/Hayward. If you guys would like to do a pre-test, I'm sure he won't mind (assuming you pay him... hahaha).

is your idle and cruising dialed up? i had that same issue before on my 03 VIII, tried almost every advice other people say. upgraded my ignition system, rebuilt my tranny, checked all that could be triggering it, none helps. but one i had my idle & cruising map dialed up. drove the car to Seattle and never once the CEL came on! so try that cause that what cure's my PO300 ;)

Check your cam sensor and make sure it's not covered in oil. You can also try gapping down your plugs.

To the OP, a CAT in good condition will clean up emissions like you wouldn't believe. I wouldn't run that cat on your car for too long though, it will kill it.

what if, similar mods and if I was running E85, would it pass with a gutted cat?
