Also, are they the only ones around?

Season started last Sunday.

Evos won both A Stock and E Street Prepared classes. (http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/Results/2004/Championship/round1.html)

All the dirt at: http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/

There are autocrosses held by the SCCA Sacramento chapter (in Stockton) and Fresno chapter (not sure where). The Sac ones are interesting in that they hold two rounds back-to-back on a weekend. I'll probably go to some of the Sac events this year since it's not too far from where I am, and there are fewer entrants (read: more runs!).

The BMW Car Club of America, Golden Gate Chapter (http://www.ggc-bmw-cca.org), holds autox'es as well, usually at Marina airport. Limit of 75 entrants, entry fee is a bit steep at $40 but you get a minimum of 6 runs. You have to be either a guest of a member (and then only once) or a BMWCCA member.

Cool, you can do us the honour of being the first SM-class (Street Modified) Evo in the region.

A word of warning: 4 of the top 10 (including 1st and 2nd place at the last Nationals) SM-class drivers in the country are from this SCCA region. But then you can learn from the best.

Actually though, SM-N (SM, Novice class) is easier because basically anybody who does any engine mods to their car--regardless if it's an Evo or a Civic--ends up in SM class. So SM Novice drivers are usually running cars that however modified couldn't hold a candle to a stock (much less modded) Evo.
:skid:

Is there a sign up sheet or registration, or just show up?

For BMWCCA you have to register at least a week in advance. For SCCA auto-x you just show up. Registration for BMWCCA auto-x is $40, SCCA is $30 or $25 (Sac region) or $35 for non-SCCA-members (Sac region only). For SCCA, registration closes at noon so show up before then even if you're running in the afternoon (run groups are posted for the next event; see http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/Results/2004/Championship/round2_info.html ).

So Tam, do i have to join the SCCA first, to be able to go to the Oakland auto-x. Or can i just show up and register?

You have to be an SCCA member to run SF/Oakland, but you don't have to be one to run Sac.

Another one: What is the cutoff for novice? (As in max prior number of events).

BluEvo

so yeah, $80 to become a member, and $30 to run for sf/oakland auto-x.

I paid $75 last August for membership I think. Details here: http://www.sfrscca.org/NewMembers/

Memberships are not available on-site. Easiest thing to do is fill out the membership form and fax it in. They can fax you a temporary membership card if you can't wait for one to come through the mail.

A few other good first-time autox'er reads:
http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/survival.html
http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm

The novice class rules can be found at: http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/Results/2003/novicerules.html

1. Novice Class is intended for beginning autocrossers. You are NOT eligible for the Novice class if you have:
- competed in more than 33% of any prior year's events (e.g., for the 2002 series: Championship series plus Slush series equals 23 events; 33% is less than 8 events. You are ineligible if you ran 8 or more events in 2002.)
- earned any regular season trophies (Regional, Divisional, Tour, Nationals)
- earned any Championship season trophies for any Novice Class (except event trophies or special competition trophies)
- earned a Winter Slush first place trophy (unless as the only eligible competitor in the class) (changed for 2002)
- been judged ineligible by the Novice Class Administrator or Solo2 Program Chair (see below)
- Autocross experience from another region and otherwise qualify -- give the real novices a break!.
2. There is a novice class for each Stock, Street Prepared, Street Touring, and Sterr Modified open class. There are no Modified or Prepared category Novice Classes
3. Only cars fitted with "Street Tires" may run in Novice Stock, Street Prepared, Street Touring, or Street Modified classes, including CSP-N. "Street Tires" are (by SFR definition) tires displaying a DOT treadwear rating of 120 or greater.
4. Novices must run in their specified run group to be eligible for points. Open class cars in your class will be running with you, so don't hesitate to approach them for help, information, or rides.
5. Time Cards: The regular class (e.g., DS, CSP) plus an N (for Novice class) -- e.g. CS-N -- must appear on the class entry on the time card for the event to ensure proper accrual of points. Your mistakes here will NOT be corrected after the event.
6. The Novice classes run with their matching open classes.
7. There are no separate Ladies' Novice classes. Ladies may run in their regular Ladies' classes, naturally.
8. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each Novice class at the end of the year according to the SFR Supplemental Regulations.
9. The Novice Class Administrator will verify eligibility of all entrants. The administrator can make appropriate adjustments to the class rules if necessary to ensure fairness to all competitors.

Uh-oh, looks like I'll qualify as a Novice. Now I just need to decide if I want to run AS or ESP :) Thanks for the info!

Remember you always have the option not to run as a novice, if you think you have enough experience. I run as a novice because I suck... because I'm a novice.

I've only run seven events (four of which were SCCA) in the last three years. So, I don't have that much practice ;) Although, I have done some homework and ridden with a few friends who've been doing it for a while.

I may go ESP because I've got some SS brake lines in the mail. I probably won't be competitive because I'll basically have none of the other allowable modifications. That way, I won't interfere with your quest for the AS-N trophy at the end of the season ;)

Heheheh, you could put "ESPN" on the side of your car.
