it's about time.

California has a New Year's resolution for motorists: Keep your hands on the wheel and off that text-messaging device.

I also heard that you won't be able to mount GPSs on the windshield anymore either. Is that true?

Sorta

"The new law, however, has an odd clause that specifies the GPS must be mounted within "a 7-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver (the passenger side) or in a 5-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver (the lower left corner of the windshield)." That means the most common and useful front-and-center GPS windshield mount is still banned. "

the texting law should just be plain common sense. They shouldn't even need a law, but so many here have no self control. As for the gps, how are you supposed to see the screen ? just hear the annoying lady on the speaker "make-a-U-turn"?

The GPS thing seems a little stupid. Why would you look ALL THE WAY INTO THE PASSENGER FRONT CORNER for directions from your GPS? That doesn't sound safe at all..your entire head is turning, not just your eyes.

My one worry is that the police will pull over people who use iPhones, ipod touch, etc as their MP3 players since it looks like texting.

I saw about 20 people with GPS systems mounted and on the 5 hwy between LA and Bay Area yesterday.

No idea why you need a freaking GPS system for a hwy that goes straight for 400 miles...

Damnit Bryan! I would like to ask myself "Are we there, yet?" while driving.

The new law actually gives the officer the discretion if your being unsafe to ticket you for dialing even. So if he thinks your texting and your really dialing you have no chance at getting out of it.

On another note, I think the law that lets war heroes not pay for metered parking is awesome. They should have done that(and more) long ago.

I wonder why they decided to outlaw talking on your cell but still let people keep texting in the first place? If anything it's safer to talk than to be looking down at your phone as you text. Silly lawmakers.
